Need help with new sound system???

Hey everyone
I am new to this jeep forum, my first 1 so be kind.
I have a jeep wrangler 05
I wanted to upgrade my sound system but have NO CLUE on what I should be buying or getting? The sound system in the 05 now is crap, I would like a pretty nice new sounding system.
I'm not knowledgable in sound systems at all.
I do NOT want to go to a place and say I have no idea what to get for my car and for them to take advantage of me and tell me things I should be getting, because i would have no idea if i needed what they we're telling me.
If anyone could possible help with maybe sizes of speakers and or any advice on any of the sound system would be such a great help
THANX so much

To be short, it's going to cost you a bundle to do it. Just a decent low end single din head unit and 4 decent speakers installed by a shop will be close to a grand, particularly if you add any kind of addon modules like XM. A nicer double din non-gps unit and 4 good speakers will be well over a grand installed. That does not include an amp or a sub either. The system I want would be about $1500 installed with all adapters, brackets, etc and wouldn't even give me all of the same functionality that my stock system offers. It would sound a lot better granted, but the voice activation features would be gone. I have become frustrated with the entire process.

Sounds about right if you get a shop to do it. But really depends on what features you want/need (as J0nx mentioned)

A good place to start: crutchfield (.com or .ca) and run through the "what fits my vehicle" which will tell you what size speakers you need. They also include adapter mounts, instructions, harnesses to make your life really easy. You can narrow down what you need/want from there and then do some price shopping

I'd start by looking at a deck that suits your needs (ie BT, usb, video, gps ... etc) and see what wiring harness you'll need (ask an you shall receive). Get that installed and then move up to replacing speakers.

There are tons of guides and walkthroughs to do this yourself. I installed a complete package: deck, amps, sub, 4 speakers, 2 tweeters, crossovers, BT, ... All with very little experience. Just had to match up similar color wires and solder them together.

Budget out what you want and post it. You'll get opinions from the WF.

Crutchfield is good to find out speaker sizes, HU capabilities and a starting point to look over options. But definately come back to WF for more input.

Basically you want to look at:
  1. HU. Probably a Single DIN unit. Figure $100-250
  2. Speakers - These will vary depending on size, make, model etc.
  3. Sub - Decide if you want a sub or not. Sort of depends on music choice and what speakers your going with. Me personally I run a sub. But I also run a passive cross-over component system with High Pass/Low Pass frequency cut-offs.
  4. Power (Amp) - Need to decide if your going to power the speakers and/or sub.
If your not in need of powered speakers or a sub, then just a nice HU and speakers will suffice.
