with the dropping of morse code requirement, I need to get my butt in gear and get my general ticket so I can talk on HF... not that I have the money right now to buy an HF rig, but it'd still be nice

So are we betting that 28.3 to 28.5 are going to be packed starting today for the next couple of months with all of us technicians?

I didn't expect any different. I had always felt that there would not be an impact simply because of the lack of interest.

I had somehow hoped there would be a group such as myself that would take advantage of the new HF access. Too much going on with work to bone up on the Gen Class test right now. Hopefully that will be a May-June project.

I'll most likely take mine in March or April. Then maybe one of these days I can throw a nice IC-706MkII in the jeep mounted so I can pull it out to run in the house too. Universal radio has the MkIIg for 899.00. MkII prices are getting lower.

I took the General test a couple of months back. Just found out that I have to pay the testing fee again to receive the General classification even though I passed it already. Might as well take a shot at the Extra license class.

I'm considering pulling my ham mount out of my Jeep and installing something different so I might be looking for a volunteer to continue "testing" the old mount.

From what I understand, 10 meters is dead right now, propogation sucks.
Now, are technitians allowed on 10 meters?
I just took a look at the band plan and didn't see where it shows who can operate where. Also, is there still a novice class? they have novice listed...
I'm still having fun learning about 2meters, we've got a repeater group here with an irlp node, they have nets every morning at 07:00 and people call in from all over the country, we even had a couple check ins from Japan.

Skeeter is right. The 10m band is dead right now. You might be able to work someone local to you. 20m's was jumping yesterday and W1AW had a special event station working the newbie's.

I worked her and welcomed everyone, even though I still think the FCC screwed up by not keeping Code for the Extra class!

We are just coming off the bottom of the solar cycle. Propagation on 10, 12 and 15 will be poor for at least another year or two on a regular basis. Maybe thats why the FCC made the change at this time, so they can ease into the upgrades and more hams on HF. Just a thought!. 17 has had some openings to Japan around 2:30 till dark Mountain time and I worked a special event stations in BC and Mexico City this past weekend. 20 has been great and will continue to be the top band to work. 40 is very good after dark. Good luck and 73's KK4LW
