New Head Unit/Center Sub

Hey all, I have a question, hopefully someone can answer shortly.
I've read the stickiest post on how to go about changing a Wranglers speakers and head unit.

My dads head unit is totally shot (his jeep wrangler 04) and his center sub (the one in the center console) is shot. I took him to best buy and slyly got him to check out radios/speakers and he was complaining that he needs a certain kind of head unit because it's a jeep, something about it not having amp.

I'm wondering two things: Will I be able to buy a normal $100 head unit (plus the wiring harness, all that fun stuff) and install it alright?

Secondly, the subwoofer in his center console his blown to hell. From the stickied post I read, it seems like finding speakers that fit Jeeps can prove challenging. Any advise on this?

Any help you guys can provide would be much appreciated. I'm not sure how active this forum is, so I'm hoping I get replies soon, otherwise I'm just going to go buy what I think is right and make sure they have a good return policy, haha.

thanks in advance.

A regular head unit will be fine, Just make sure its standard size. Also the center subwoofer can be purchased from multiple online vendors such as Quadratec Exclusive Plug 'N Play Speakers - Quadratec

I replaced head unit last year in my TJ with one from Quadratec--with their harness---one of the easiest mods I have done. Good instructions and diagrams. Took longer to program after install than to do the work.

I had my factory sub rebuilt last year and the shop that did it gave me a year warranty. So far so good.

I have purchased a lot of speakers from Quadratec (can now hear radio on the interstate at 80mph with the top off) and the installs were all very easy and straight forward.

I see now that they carry a replacement sub for TJs.

Most of my gear was Crutchfield. May be a little more pricey, but I was very satisfied with all the extra's that came with the purchase. Good instructions provided and the customer support was helpful on at least five calls during my install. Installs are pretty straightforward in the jeeps so I would say anybody with minimal skills can get 'er done. Good luck.

This week I installed a new head unit - Sony DSXS100. Got from Crutchfield which is my usual go-to for car electronics. I must say I was very disappointed with their master sheet on this one. In particular I had a difficult time figuring out how to ground the unit. After monkeying around I figured it out...

Otherwise this head unit is great. I have a couple extra iPods and the "Tune Tray" works great to save precious space; one iPod is now specifically my jeep iPod and it holds over 10k songs, replacing 3 thick CD booklets. There is an additional AUX input for my iPhone.

Next I am waiting on delivery of my new speakers. I am an Infinity snob. I ordered four Kappa 5.25's through amazon. I've already received my baffles and wiring harness. Big shout out to this site for directing me to Nalin MFG for the dash adapter plate; I received it today and it looks LEGIT. Thank you.

I'm already researching a replacement for the center console subwoofer. I've seen the one on Quadratec that advertises itself as the "only available aftermarket replacement subwoofer for 2001-2006 Wranglers". It looks like I should be able to get another 6.5 sub in there. If anyone has experience please share. It doesn't have to be Infinity

Thanks!

Head unit install is easy. Crutchfield makes it easier by including the harness and dash kit. I did it the hard way, but it still wasn't bad. As for the sub, mine was blown when I bought my jeep. I found a Kicker that was shallow enough to fit fine. Only had to drill a couple of new mounting holes in the plastic. I got it off of Amazon- Kicker 6.5" CompVT Car Subwoofer 2 OHM 10CVT652
