i took out the audiovox radio that was in my 92 wrangler but when i took it out i found out that it was not the stock radio and the radio before it was stolen so all the wires were messed with and now i dont know what color goes to what function of the radio.
does anyone know anything about their radio and how to put a new one in without knowing the wire coloring?
Use a multimeter or test light to see which one is hot all the time, and which one is hot with the ignition on. Then run a continuity check to find your ground or just find the nearest bolt and make a new ground. As for the speaker wires, double check to make sure the rest of the wires aren't hot(you might have one that's hot when the lights are on for illumination). Hook up your hots, ground and antenna. Then just tune in a station or put in a cd and hook up each wire to see which speaker comes on and wire them accordingly. Thats all I did.

when i bought the jeep all the wiring was all messed up
there were wires hanging out and it has taken me 2 months to at least figure some of it out
i still cant figure out where the after market offroad lights on my front bumper run too, or my running lights on the front sides.
what stereo are you installing, the audiovox? Or some other one?
If it is an aftermarket ie. pioneer, sony, kenwood, alpine or what ever, for the most part they use a standard color code.
Yellow = 12+ Constant (memory)
Red = 12+ Ignition on
Black = 12- Ground
Blue or Blue/White = Power Antenna trigger or trigger to turn on an amplifier
White = Front Left Speaker +
White/Black = Front Left Speaker -
Gray = Front Right Speaker +
Gray/Black = Front Right Speaker -
Green = Rear Left Speaker +
Green/Black = Rear Left Speaker -
Violet = Rear Right Speaker +
Violet/Black = Rear Right Speaker -
Once you find out which ones are the power wires on your jeep harness hook them up to the stereo so that you can turn it on and get some sound. Then grab any speaker wire pair off the stereo and start touching them to the remaining wires on the jeep harness to see which speaker makes noise. Label it and move on then match them all up to the corresponding wires on the stereo.
TEST ALL OTHER JEEP HARNESS WIRES FOR 12 VOLTS BEFORE HOOKING SPEAKER WIRES TO THEM!!! You will fry your stereo if one of them has power.
im putting in a pioneer head unit
and i need to route that to an amp and then into the sub.
or should i amp the front speakers too
the guy that owned the jeep before me switched all the wire colors in the jeep so a wire that is violet now comes out and all i can see is red or something like that thats my problem. if i take the whole dashboard off can i see the wiring underneath?
i have pioneer speakers and idk whats in the back with the koiiler amp and rocksford ps sub
one or two more quesstions if you dont mind. i think i blew a fuse because no matter what wire i touch with the multimeter it dosent give me a reading. with the multi meter can i just have the - touching the body of the rig and just use the + to test the wires? and if i blew a fuse where is it located?
Why would you want to use any of the stock wiring for a high output new stereo? I can't imagine what stock wire you would need. Just build your own new wiring harness in the comfort of your house with the air conditioner on and then install that in the Jeep. Get the power directly off the battery for the radio and amp, you'll need all new wire for the speakers, etc. There will be less splicing and you can make better connections and use better wire than the factory ever did. Just a suggestion.
well i just tried what CAT said and i have 4 like wires i have one coming from the battery that is for the amp but its spliced under the dash and that comes out into two live wires then there are two wires that were just stuck in my fuse box idk what those are for.
if i do it myself and make my own harness then where do the wires from the radio run aka the 12+ constant (yellow) the 12+ ignition(red)???
oh and now that i started this my jeep wond start at all it wont even turn over?? what happened
This will get you the stock wire colors that went to the original factory radio, you'll still need to test em to see if they are running. If you have several wires coming out that are all powered and don't go to anything, I would cut them short and tape them off so they don't ground out and blow fuses. If the previous owner ran new speaker wires then you'll have to find the wires and determine what is positive and negative and wire that to the new radio harness. If you can't find power wires you can run new ones from the ignition harness that comes out of the main fuse block and goes to the key cylinder. I would only wire that up as a last resort.
As for the engine not turning over it sounds like you blew the ignition fuse, which is one of the main fuses under the hood. you'll have to pull the fuses and visually check them to see if they are blow. You'll also need to be aware of why it blew in the first place. The main power wire probably touched a part of the frame or the ground wire and caused it to take out the main fuse. It is really important that you work carefully after you determine what wire it is make the connection and tape it up.
I hope this helps you out. I know where you're coming from, I did car stereo install for 5 years and had customers like you all the time come in with a rats nest of wires and whole lot of problems. Good Luck

thanks to all of you it took me 4 hours of work and re wiring i took the dash off and rewired everything and i now know alot more about my jeep. my jeep is up and running and it sounds good. one thing to tiburon the sub doesnt hit very hard is this just because there is no top on the jeep?? or do i just need to tune it. but its all done and i didnt have to pay 200 for some other people to do it you guys saved me alot of money thanks again
