Im new so i hope im not asking a dumb question, i searched but couldn't find my answers.
i'm looking to mount a cb in my new jkur softop, and i'm looking for some performance when not off road also, im not too worried about communication on the trail because i dont need much mileage.

Im thinking of the rear tire mount area, does it help to have the antenna mounted so the stick is above the spare tire and away from the tire and steel belts blocking the signal or does it matter really?

Also how much performance is gained by having the antenna sticking above the jeep top over just being even with the top, i dont have allot of room when going into my garage and i dont want to have to take it off all the time or worry about forgetting to,lol.

The further the antenna is from any obstruction, the better. Most use the spare tire carrier mount, because it is easy to install and doesn't require any extra drilling. The best place for a cb antenna is mounted on the hood, which requires drilling and, that last I checked, reinforcing areas of the hood. I suggest you check out rightchannelradios.com. They have an on-line reference library, that has sections on installation, trouble shooting, etc.

Get a tail light mount from TeraFlex - Upgrade your Jeep | TeraFlex Suspensions which goes between the tail light and tub. That places the antenna at the corner, about the best location available. A 2' tall Firestick like their FS-2 model will clear your garage door no problem and it will work fine on the trail. That's what I use and it works great, always good signal reports from everyone. As my Jeep grew taller and my antenna mounts changed, I went from a 4' to a 3' and then to my present 2' maybe 12 years ago... I never really noticed any difference in how well my CB performed on the trail between any of those antennas.

I have a Right Channel Radio antenna designed for the JK that's mounted on the driver side front fender, using an existing bolt. it's barely above the top, away from the upper body enough to get great reception and on trails, I can see what it's going to hit and drive according.
