no tail lights

I have a 1989 jeep wrangler. I have no tail lights. The brake lights work but are not as bright as I feel they should be.

When I turn the head lights on the brake lights do not work. When I turn on the left blinker both blinker indicators on the dash light up. When I turn on the right blinker none of the indicators come on.

All of the lights on the front are working properly. I noticied that the silver blinker relay on the fuse panel gets real hot. All fuses are good. Can any one give me advise where to start....

Sounds like you are going to have to start tracing wires - not what you wanted to hear I'm sure. If the lights are all working the way they are supposed to in the front then I can't see how it could be anything but a problem with the wiring going to the rear.

There's a wiring diagram section here in the service manual shown here: Jeep Knowledge Base

It's for a '93 but hopefully it will give you some place to start... Good luck.

I had a similar problem with a tj and ended up being a hack job of a plow install with scotch lock connectors near the headlights

I'm thinking that's what he has only the hack job was probably for trailer lights or something like that.

Gotta love tracking down short circuits! Pain in the arse but it sounds like a good weekend project for ya. And while you are doing that you might as well go over the rest of the wiring while the weather is still decent

Thanks for the good advise. This jeep has had a bunch of extra lighta put on it before I got it. The other owner just advised me that she was driving down the road and hit a bump and the headlights went out and a few minutes later they came back on but has not had any other problems since. Time to start tracing wires. Thanks again, I will post what I find.
