Old radio

Have an old 23 channel Cobra I bought used about 25 years ago, tried to hook it up to my jeep the other day and didn't have any luck at all. The last time I used it, it worked fine, but the was about 6 years ago...should I just buy a new one?

Yes you should buy a new one but don't just throw that one away.
It may just be a bad mic or some corrosion on the contacts.
They're fun to take apart and fiddle with.

Speaking of mics, Cobra's require the mic to be plugged in to work, was the mic plugged in when you tried?

Rat Shack radios need the mic in as well. The radio's will turn on but the volume is REALLY low until the mic is in. Ask me how many times I bitched at the guys at the store before I figured that one out...

Yea, the mike was plugged in...I even took it apart to see if it had a fuse in it. (it didn't) I guess with hourly repair rates, it would prolly be almost as cheap to buy a new one...Hey, thanks for the input

I have been thinkin'. I have a Magnetic antenna, and have always had it on either the trunk lid or the roof...When I tried hooking it up on the TJ, I put it on the bumper...could the coating on the bumper possibly be the prob? I couldn't find a place for a ground wire on the unit, so...would it be worth trying to hook it up again, maybe with the antenna on the hood or something? Or am I just clutching at straws? (budget is terribley tight at this time)

It depends on what the radio is doing. Are you getting anything at all? lights? sound?
You don't need a physical ground with a magnetic base antenna, having it in the center of the hood would significantly improve performance since the hood provides a much better ground plane than a bumper, having it on the bumper wouldn't keep the radio from working though.

I found a cobra 25 in a repo, that I put in the Jeep. If you check out my Help! threads, skeeter gave some great advice, although it was pretty specific to my equipment.

My experience with hooking up a cobra:

RF all the way up, squelch all the way down obviously. Volume all the way up.

Make sure the microphone is pluged in.

Bleep the mic for one second, and it kind of "kicks" the radio into gear, and makes it turn on. Thats how mine was anyway.

Radio is likely bad.
Do you have a radio shop near you?
Sometimes they'll fix those old radios just for fun.
