Open air Jeep, should I upgrade the factory security or replace with aftermarket

I have a 2door softtop Jeep, and an upgraded after market stereo.

How does the factory security system work. Does it actually have an alarm? Or does it merely prevent the ignition from working?

I might replace with an after market system, but would like to know if the factory system is decent.

What year Jeep? Some Jeeps have minimal security features and I would recommend something like a Viper for sure. Also, a detachable face stereo.

The problem is that you will probably have to replace your dash, as it will likely be destroyed by the crow bar, and your window too, when they smash it to get entry. If it is a plastic window, it will likely be slashed to get entry. I had this happen to me in the past with my Mustang. I had to replace my entire console, because it was cracked and broken in numerous places, and my window was smashed. I don't think you will be soooooo happy then.

I have had a Jeep for over 20 years and have run several electronic security systems....They all in time left me disappointed, once I was almost stranded on the trail because a starter kill decided to go out so we had to pull the system to get back home.

Then another time I had someone bust my column and still try to steal the jeep, they jumped in broke the column then the alarm went off...and yes here was a nice little blinking red light when they did this...

Had a buddy have this also happen out hiking once....and the damage to the column ended up strading him..

So my final solution is a battery or iginition kill switch and a steering column lock. the steering column lock is the best anti theift device you can get, no access to the column and key switch no stealing your Jeep...If they do take the time to drill it out then they will need to find your started or battery kill switch.... That much effort for a Jeep let them have it...

I also feel the same way about the stero, I get the $99 install special every couple years since the weather and dust seems to take its toll on the stereo.

I hope this advice helps... Keep Jeeping Safe!

Another piece of advice is invest in some Tuffy Security products..

My Column Lock

Tuffy Products I have installed... Under seat security drawer, Locking Console, Locking Glove Box, Under Hood Security box.. (no pic of console)

I left the top off my Jeep all summer long and sometimes the doors. I park it in a garage at night but I would leave it outside at the store, at friends houses and sporting events. No need for any additional alarm but I did take a few precautions:

1) replaced the stock stereo with an aftermarket double DIN with removable face. Why would someone steal a stereo with no face on it.

2) I took the factory sub out of the back of the Jeep and put two aftermarket subs under the front seats I fiberglass enclosures. Completely stealth.

3) The stereo amplifiers are up under the dash, again, completely stealth.

4) had a welder friend of mine make a diamond plate cover for the back so that when I lock the doors, it also locks a sealed tailgate section. If a thief wants something bad enough, they can unscrew the cover, but it's powder coated steal and pretty heavy. Anything I don't want stolen, I throw in the back and lock it.
