Photo of your HAM radio setup.

I'm nearly ready to install a mobile rig, as soon as I decide which radio I want, and I'm interested in seeing your setups.

Antenna mounts, in cabin radio installations, placement and wiring of external speakers etc.... lets see it all.

Kenwood TM-281 is nice. I have an icom 2100h in my work truck. One thing that you should know is that the mics use different methods to "hang". The kenwood mic is like a regular cb mic with that circular thing on the back. The icom is a thinner mic with a place for it to be hooked somewhere. You'll need to stick some sort of hook onto your dash or radio for the mic to hang from. I'll post pics tomorrow.

ooooh.... the 8800! I'm trying to decide between it, and the 8900 at the moment.

I forgot to put this in my first. The faceplate is now mounted on the windshield frame between the sunvisors.

Yaesu ft857d. Control head mounted above rear view mirror. Mic on arm rest. Main body under rear seat. Speaker in front of stick shift. Antenna mount on rear passenger side above break light. I use ham sticks for my antenna. Works great and is easy to use.

How often do you use the HF on the 857? That radio has been suggested to me instead of the 8900, since the 8900 is FM only.

I try to use the 857 at least a few times a week. Use VHF more than HF. I have not talked to another local on the trails yet. Like to see where I can still hit my local repeaters from.

I think there is an extra Cobra in my garage.

What did you use to do this?

I ended up buying an FT2800M last week for dirt cheap and got it installed today. I don't want to drill into the console or dash to mount it, and I'm thinking that this might be the best option.

Is that just pipe clamps with the rubber in them?

Right now its just sitting here until I figure it out.

Yes, just pipe clamps and a couple of "L" shelf brackets. I'll get a pic in a little while.

I think I got the general idea. I used regular pipe clamps and white stick on window insulation to prevent scratching. I still have some tweaking to do, but at least it's up there and out of the way and I didn't have to drill into the Jeep.

Does yours swing back and forth?

While it stays up there, it's not exactly immobilized. It kinda swings back and forth going down the road.

I'm going to have to figure something out to stabilize it a bit better.

No. Mine has just a little play to it so it rattles a bit on bumpy roads (I use styrofoam to stop that) but it does not swing up too easily. Maybe your pipe clamps are a little too big?

I used half inch, and had to bend them. What size did you use?

Mine swings back and forth on normal city streets with just small bumps. It would never survive a trail.

I wanna say mine were 3/8" but I can't remember exactly. Mine doesn't move that easily. I'd have to force it.

Heres a video of mine. I stopped at Home Depot but couldn't find anything smaller than what I already had. I asked for pipe clamps and they showed me to these big things that looked like hinges that you put around pipes with leaks.

I'm going to have to figure something else out.

Try this:

Also, your video is "private".
