Mount them the same as a CB or ham antenna. Not as critical since they are receive only, nothing to tune.

Before you go to the trouble of installing the scanner in your jeep you should check state and local ordnances pertaining to scanners in vehicles. In most states it is illegal to install a scanner in a motor vehicle, unless your a law enforcement officer, first responder or have a letter from the local police. And in most states amateur radio operators are allowed to have a scanner in a Motor vehicle. Fines can be steep and even jail time for having a scanner in a vehicle. Just my 2cents but worth the check!!

Red makes a good point, some states are very anal about it. A quick check says you are Ok in PA. U.S. Scanner Laws Stay out of NY. While they are legal here, some police might give you a hard time anyway.

A CB antenna might work, give it a try. You will probably need an adapter for the cable connection.

If you want a desicated antenna, one of these could be adapted;

ProComm JBC290M JBC290MM JBC290WC Mobile Scanner Antenna

Here is Universal's page of scanner antennas; Scanner Antennas Look around, might be other you like.

Just another 2-cents....
Most jurisdictions within the US held their hands out for Uncle Sam to rain money on them shortly after 9/11 and the DOJ wrote a lot of checks.
A popular request for most agencies was updated communications so that they could communicate more effectively with other agencies. Specifically, the "must have" at the top of the wish lists....were digital radios which include encryption so that the evil-doers could not monitor the air waves and know when the cavalry's a-com'n. Just listen for the bugler. (That's a guy with a brass horn, not a guy with a stocking-cap and raccoon mask).

Anywhoooo....before you open your wallet....might wanna have the seller fire that puppy up and make sure you can hear what you think you wanna hear. Otherwise, its just a Ouija board with knobs.

As long as your locals haven't gone apco 25 (also know as project 25) you'll be alright with a handheld from radio shack. Using a cb antenna would limit your "ears" as it would be less sensitive in some frequencies than others.

I'd mount it behind the center console since you don't need to constantly be changing channels and whatnot.
