Previous owner sub install...lack there of

When I brought the jeep home there was a ~12" sub in a custom enclosure that filled the entire console. Quickly found out it wasn't hooked up and couldn't find the wire so it's been sitting in my room the past 18 months. There was a real thick wire (think it said 1 gauge) that ran from the console to the battery but it wasn't hooked up to anything.

Fast forward to now i was putting my carpets in a week or so ago I finally stumbled upon the wire for the stock sub (grey+black, right...?). I've research a bit, but not much stuck. Hate electronics. As for the power wire there's only one wire coming out of the enclosure and it's definitely for the one to the head unit. It's a pretty well built box and I've been avoiding it, but will I have to open it up?

Any ill effects of splicing the sub into the system without the big wire? Or do I have to track down an amp so it's not boom electronics everywhere?

If it can't be fixed with squats or fish oil...your probably gonna die (u aware?)

The big wire would have been for an amplifier. If there isn't an amplifier under either of your seats then the PO likely removed it before selling the jeep. You'll need an amplifier to do anything constructive with that sub.

That's what I assumed, such a stingy move. Just trying to be a cheap bastard myself though. Good thing I start the job thursday.

Can you please post a pic of the box? And measurements if you wouldn't mind?

I'll get em tomorrow for ya. The thing is basically the shape of the console, there was maybe 3" at most from the lip tothe top of the box an an inch or two of space on each side.

Thanks I'm trying to build a box to fit a 12 and am just looking for ideas.

Just make sure you account for airspace. If you don't the sound will be horrible.

There are subs that will work in small enclosures, just have to look at the listed space needed

I can't find out how much air space mine needs so I'm just kinda winging it around 2 cubic feet.

Lol well as a result of being too lazy to take a real peak turns out the sub is really an 8". That's what I get for going from memory. Enclosure could easily fit a 10", and if you increased he height a bit you could squeeze in a 12 probably, but no more console. Lemme know if there are any more shots ya want or need to decipher my atrocious handwriting(tried my best). As for the wire no way I'm getting out of buying an amp right?

That badge says 'subzeromfg.com', dead domain.
Edit #3, seems like they're still in business making enclosures and what not. Based in Oregon, gonna keep digging.

Can you take the sub out and find any numbers on the back of it? You will need an amp for sure!

The thing is nearly seamless, would hate to ruin a good box. But I will be jiggling a pocket knife and what not into it to see if any thing 'pops' out since there are no screws or visible fasteners.

Finally got some research to stick and it seems like I'll need a single channel amp with a max of 400 watt rms. Single voice coil as the picture shows. I say 400 because looking at other 8" subs that seems to be the average.

Can't go by average... some will be 75 watts rms others will be 750... there should be a trim ring on the outer portion of the speaker hiding some screws..

Popped it out, only numbers were hand written on the back side of the cone, had to be put on before the unit was assembled. Google didn't help me on the first number.
458.22-5
and below it
118 (big space) 00

Hmm.. nothing on the magnet? Like on a sticker? If I was guessing, Id say it probably has about a 100-150 rms handling.. but that's a guess and also not knowing the impedance of the sub is going to make it tough to match an amp to it..

Then either swap the sub for a new one you know the specs for or guess at selecting an amp...

The poverty side of me wants to get the amp, but the buy once side says go all new. If I did go the amp route would there be any problem with me getting ~200rms amp and adjusting the power output? That still leaves the resistance out of it and I haven't read enough to see what would go wrong if I got an amp with the wrong one. Not an audiophile at all for what it's worth, just want .something. on the low end

You could measure the resistance with an ohm meter and that may give you a better idea and could be close enough, though not perfect as it's AC impedance were really looking for which can change with other factors.

If you're just looking for a little low end, get an amp and use caution when setting the gain.. should work fine.. is it ideal? No. Is it good enough? Most likely.
