Radio Reception

1999 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Edition
4.0L engine

I can only pull a station in occasionally and then it will not hold it. Most of the time it is only static. I have checked the antenna wire and its connected to the radio on one end and to the antenna on the other end. I have looked around for fixes and have not found anything that works yet. What can I do to repair this without changing the factory radio or the factory antenna?

Thanks

I would get the 1999 FSM and trace the antenna cable. There seemed to be more than one connection between the radio and the antenna when I looked under my glove box, to trace the cable myself.

You might also try this site. The rubber one looks real nice.

Question Traced wiring

Thanks for the responses. I traced down the antenna wire today and its a one piece hooked from the radio to the antenna? Have any of you experienced this problem. I don't want to waste money on antenna or radio if this is something simple. I am saving for tires and rims.

If you can pull the radio out of dash far enough to get to the antenna jack and still have the radio hooked up, unplug the antenna take a metal coat hanger and straighten it out. Scrape one end down to bare metal. Bend it about 2" from that end at a 90 degree angle, turn radio on and tune to a known station in your area. Carefully insert the bare end into the antenna jack and make contact with the metal center conductor of the antenna jack if you get a station to play then you've found your problem.

Can you pick up AM stations clearly?
If not you definatly have an antenna problem.
If you can pickup AM but not FM you have a problem with the radio itself.
AM broadcast is more antenna dependant than FM.

***UPDATE***

I pulled the radio out so I could gain access to the back where the antenna it hooked up. I made sure it was not loose and then tried for reception on FM side with no luck. I tried AM side and this worked. I then took the antenna loose and tried FM and AM. FM didn't work but AM still worked. I then tried the cloth-hanger thingy that was mentioned above. No difference either way. I am thinking the radio is the issue.
