Howdy,
Instead of buying a new head unit to replace my 130 RES (with uConnect) I've bought an iPad mini. For now I'm just going to sit it horizontally in the little dash tray on my 2012 JK and run a USB line to it directly from the uConnect module and up through a hole I'll drill in the tray (pics to come). If I like using the iPad I may have a mod shop do something a bit more permanent/professional, but I figure this setup will give me a chance to really feel it out.

Anyway, I'm curious if any of you have come across an iPad app that displays a combination of Nav, inclinometer, accelerometer, and music. I'd aware I saw a pic of someone's ipad install that had an app like this, but I'll be darned if I can find it again.

Thanks!!

Some pics to follow. Also, I changed my approach... It was pretty easy to drill a hole in the bottom of the center console under the rubber mat and run a USB extension cable from there along the right edge of the shifting area and then up through the glove department box and finally emerging through a hole I drilled in the dash tray. I removed the front dash which made fishing the USB cable much easier. BTW, if you do drill a hole in the bottom of your console be careful as there is a cable running through that area that you could easily cut. ...i got lucky, but if you go slow it shouldn't be an issue.

I wish the built in USB port was powerful enough to fully charge the iPad mini, but if this becomes an issue I can always just unplug the extension in the center console and plug it into my 12volt usb charger for a while and stream music via bluetooth. Maybe someone will figure out a way to insert extra amperage into the uConnect USB port via a hub like setup. I figure this arrangement will make it easy to add this type of solution down the road. (as opposed to running a new USB line directly from the uConnect module.

Most USB connectors whether on a computer or a vehicle or rated at 500mv & .5 amp. The iPads require 1 amp minimum for charging. The only way to get that is by purchasing a lighter adapter. However if you are running it with the display on, you might want to look at a 2 amp charger instead of 1 amp.

I've yet to find an all-in-one application, but here's what I like so far..

* Waze : Navigation. Clean interface. I like the way it zooms in and out of the map in 3d mode when you speed up or slow down. Looks great on the dash. Cool social aspect to it where members provide traffic and speed trap info.

* Track 8 : iPod music player replacement. This one just looks awesome. Have to see it to believe it. Also, it doesn't block the screen when plugged into the Jeeps USB like the built in app does. I understand there is jail break app that fixes this, but Track 8 is some damn nice eye candy for the dash. ...for the passengers that is :^)

* aSmartHUD : interesting compas, speedometer, altitude, music app. Has a HUD mode that reverses text so you can lay it on your dash at night to see the screen projected onto your windshield. High cool factor, but not sure just how useful it is. There is a version that integrates Navigation that I need to try. Would be nice if it had clinometer built in.

* 4x4 Gyro HD : very basic inclinometer. roll and pitch.

* Google voice search. Very good voice recognition. Most replies are in the form of text google searches, but if you ask a simple question like "how windy is it" she will tell you out loud.

* GPS Drive Motion-X : I haven't played around with this navigation app much yet, but it comes highly recommended in the app store.

* Telenav GPS : Again, haven't played around with this navigation app much yet either. Also, highly recommended and seems to have a cleaner look IMHO.

* Pandora : streaming music. I feel like they could work on this interface. You can get skins for the PC version, but I'm not sure this is the case for the ipad version.

* the much maligned built in map application. What's nice about it is that it integrates so well with Siri. I haven't tried it in navigation mode yet.

So, what am I missing? I still wish I could find an all in one app that looks clean and provides a nice overview of all the functions above.

The newest release of iTunes doesn't black out the screen any more when connected via USB to my radio (I have an aftermarket Kenwood). I prefer iTunes because I can access all 25,000 of my songs via the cloud and iTunes Match.

Yep, newest version of iTunes now works :^)

Also, found another cool app. This one requires a OBDII (OBD2) device to send it engine info It's called Dash Command. Very cool app that gives you a "real time" visual representation of things like RPM, Vacuum, coolant and intake temps, MAP, MAF... pretty much everything the Jeep's computer is tracking. Price is a bit steep at $50, but none of the other iPad OBD apps come close to its quality.

Btw, I bought the following OBD2 wifi device. Works quite nicely... Wifi Obd2 Elm327 Car Code Reader for Iphone Ipod Touch Ipad : Amazon.com : Automotive

So you use this app with your jeep? Does it do all of what it claims to do?

Thanks rigormortis for the idea to run the extension. I am doing the AngryEyes mount setup to the ipad and have been trying to find a permanent power source. Have you found any other ways since, or do you still feel your way is the best? The USB cable you can buy for the back of the Uconnect 130 isn't enough to charge it, right?

Thanks, I bought it from Amy at angryoffroad.com It is plastic with a glued plastic frame pieces on the inside and then it looks like it plastic wrapped over the top of it. It screws to the dash through the existing screw hole. check out their website has better pics on there. I'm happy with it. I would have preferred to have put a Glaxay Note 8 in it but I couldn't find one in black... just seem to make them in white. I also bought a complete set of JK custom colored grab handles from them as well..... also very happy.
