Replacing Stock Speakers?

Wondering if replacing the stock speakers in the non Infinity stereo system will improve sound very much without having to add an additional amp. Also if I add a stock subwoofer does it sound very good?

I replaced my stockers with some kicker 6.5" in the sound bar and there is a nice difference. Adding an amp would be better

There are a couple of really good threads I've been following on the same topic. Check the one out started by me and there are great recs on new stuff to buy made by a member. I changed out my speakers for Alpine Type S in the sound bar and they sound better but they weren't a huge differece

Also I do not have the subwoofer in the back but I looked behind the carpet in the rear passenger well and there is a plug with 4 wires in it. I assume this is for the sub if it were installed. Do you know if it is prewired and would drive a small aftermarket sub and what color wire goes to what?

Factory subs are in the center console. The plug in the rear would be for something else but I'm not a expert

I have seen pictures and some for sale with them mounted in the rear passengers side trunk area. I assumed they were factory.

That's where factory JKs are.

do those kickers for the overhead sound bar have covers for them? or are they visible for someone to see them to steal?

I believe that plug is for hooking up the rear window defroster and wiper for adding a hard top.

I replaced my soundbar speakers with Alpine Type S 6.5's ... They are Coaxial speakers so the install was easy and the sound quality isn't an amazing difference at normal volumes. At higher volumes they perform a lot better than stock.

My front speakers I replaced with Alpine Type R's. The sound quality is a lot better than stock or the type S' I put in the soundbar. They are component speakers though, so I need to add a sub to really get the best sound out of them at high volumes / songs with a lot of bass.

Ok so I went out and bought a Rockford Fosgate p300-10 300 watt powered sub and I have a whole new sound system just by doing this! I will still replace the other stock speakers so the mids will get crisper but this is an amazing difference.

I've been thinking about getting the 12" version of that. Did you install it yourself?

I found the same thing with my type s's. I was thinking about swapping my dash for Type Rs and a sub as well. Glad I was on the right track with my idea.

Yeah, when you get the Type R's make sure you get the package with the tweets included, they can push more sound at high volumes before they break up, unlike the stock tweets. Just don't expect any bass response at all out of those 6.5's ... again, as a midrange component they sound amazing for midrange - lowmid tones but have zero bass response. A Rockford p300 would fix that though

And you're running this off the stock head unit? This sounds like the perfect package if so. What amp is pushing the Rockford?

For the moment, yes I have a stock head unit. I want to upgrade to a kenwood with Navigation.

The rockford 12 has a 300 watt amp.

Yes installed it myself, just tapped into the rear speakers to get the bass signal, it has a 300watt amp in it. I still have the stock head unit in there for now and it works pretty good.

I have a hard top the wiring for that is on the drivers side. The plug I am talking about is on the passenger side behind the carpet.

Also keep in mind that I have an Unlimited. There is quite a bit of room in the back in it. Not sure if the 12 would fit in the back of a 2 door jeep, it is a bigger box than the 10.

I'm thinking about just going with a powered 10 or an 8. Which did everyone put in first, the sub/amp or the component speakers.? I will do both but don't wan the system to sound like garbage while I wait to put in the other component.

Not sure which sound system you have, but I have the non Infinity system. I just put the powered sub in. My sub has a remote volume on it to tune how much bass you want from the sub, which allows you to turn the bass down to the vehicle speakers so they do not distort. The stock system gets loud it just has no low end bass.

Which powered sub did you add?

I'm gonna be such a cheaply...lol. But since I have my top off I don't want to invest a lot into the stereo. So far I have the stock speakers in the dash and a pioneer cd deck w/ iPod/iPhone control that I got for 80 bucks @ Walmart. What I found that I want to get was 2 6x9" dual voice coil pioneers in twin boxes at the pawn shop as well as a wedge truck box for a 10" sub that will fit perfectly behind the rear seat.

I would actually be dubious of that ... the cheapest I've seen it has been $269.99 ... and I looked all over for it.

Is this what you found?
