Jeeps are small. So for my birthday, the kids just got me a ($40wallmart) cobra 19 ultra III. beautiful lil radio. couple that with a 4' glass whip antennae. COBRA is and always has been a coveted radio for many years. Now this would not have done back in the day when I was all like.. living the convoy CB radio life and skip talkin etc... but today when all I really want is to be connected.. this is perfect. Pretty sure it's small enough to mount inside the dash over or under my am/fm/hd/bluetooth equipped radio. it's perfect unless you want to talk on single side band and push more power or talk on channels that are other than legal here in the us. a little more power is not a bad thing.. but it is illegal here.

Have you ever used a hand held cb? A friend of mine highly recommended getting one

I'd pass on that. (personal preferance)

Not much range.
(a little more than line of sight maybe 3/4 to 1 mile very effective).
conventional CB's reach 5-7 mile (many get much more.. and then some get more than that.. but they would be illegal)

Hand Held Radio would prevent installation headaches and you would certainly be able to connect with fellow jeepers on a trail ride

it'll take a beating flippin around inside a bumpy old jeep. The antennae is fragile and long so you would have to ensure that it comes with.. or buy a 6" flexible rubber one.. more of "less range".

easy to store, portable.. stick to midland or motorola for quality and tuffness as well as audio that you can actually understand. Get the 12v car adapter because of extreme low battery life. Be sure the radio is at least 4watt output. (minimum should be a deal breaker)

Walkie Talkies are versatile and should not be discounted. the police use them.
some are very nice.. and with the long antennae you will have increased range maybe 3 miles.
you'll get what you pay for here.

pros: no installation, portability, use it anywhere, hide-ability (u can lock it up)

cons: range, bulky and heavy to hold, bulky to use, battery life, it can be easily misplaced, left behind, damaged or bounced outta the jeep.

Cobra makes a very small radio.. virtually everything is contained in the microphone. avoid it.

Good Luck..

the more control functions in a microphone increases the # of things that can break.. mics take a beating.

Talking I'm in the market myself. I have done probably too much research on the subject.

I would recommend the Uiden 520 XL

-small,cheap, tough, simple and works good with a good antenna setup.
There is also a 510 XL for about 10-15 dollars less. You loose the R/F gain and the ability to make it into a PA system (if you install a horn).

As far as handhelds the Cobra 75 is a good option and is super popular . The speaker on it is a bit weak. You really need to get an external speaker for this one. It doesn't have a PA option, and the squelch and volume are a bit hard to use. You will have to mount a small body piece in addition to having the hand held. It has a ton of cool features like:
-scanning thru channels
- Having 2 channels broadcast
- 4 memory channels
- Its mall and easy to store.
-You can change the channel with the handset
-Weather Channels

It is a bit more risky being that all the components are in the hand held so you need to make sure not to drop it.

The Midland 75 seems like a pretty good hand held. It isn't as popular as the Cobra. It plugs into the cigarette lighter vs the battery like the other ones. This power technically isn't as good but works. It seems like a good option for someone who just wants to use it on the trails and maybe use a magnet antenna, then keep it tucked away most of the time. I have heard it only takes about 15 seconds to make it into a walkie talkie if you want to spot someone.

I would recommend checking out the following sites for mounts and stuff.
Cool Tech LLC. Niche products for unique and exclusive vehicles.
CB Radios & CB Antennas - Cobra, Uniden, Wilson, K40 & Firestik
These peoples mount (below) is probably the best ie high up and not in-between the tire and window. I have seen someone mount theirs near the top of the 3rd break light which would work good too.

ARIZONA ROCKY ROAD ANTENNA MOUNTS FOR JEEP WRANGLER, UNLIMITED AND LIBERTY

The antenna makes all the difference in CB's. You want to make sure you get it grounded well. Then you need to tune them with a SWR meter. In theory you want them to be as high as possible and have 1/3 above the roof.

I just ordered the Uniden 520 myself. I was originally going to get the cobra 75 but learned it had no PA option and the Uniden did. Plus the Uniden was about $40 cheaper and all the reviews I read on it were good. Got mine from eBay for $47 shipped.
