Sirius Antenna on Roll Bar Cuts Out Frequently, Now what?

I recently acquired a 1998 TJ Sport and have replaced the factory head unit with an Alpine CDA-105 with a SIR-ALP1 unit for Sirius radio. My problem is frequent signal cut out when listening to Sirius..

I had a friend make a mount similar to the Quadratec mount so I could mount it on the top of my roll bar which I assumed to be the highest, best place for it to go. My Sirius reception in the TJ sucks compared to my BMW that came with it as a factory option which rarely cuts out. The Jeep cuts out constantly (albeit briefly) near foliage or 2+ story buildings

Here's a picture of my mount and placement:

It is near the passenger side of the roll bar (you can see the soundbar behind it)--

A few questions:
-- Would a "micro-dot" antenna work better in the same spot?
-- Should I move my existing square DIRECTED antenna to the hood?

I read around that the roll bar may not have an effective ground plane for the magnetic mount antenna to receive signal. I will note that I never have the soft top on.

I really don't want to have to move it onto the hood unless I have to, but if it will improve my signal I will.

Any ideas? All thoughts/experiences would be extremely helpful.

Would a better option be a taillight CB antenna mount with a Sirius truck antenna? Truckers always have good things to say about this antenna. Sirius Truck Mount Antenna: Electronics

Well I have since found that I am actually near a terrestrial repeater, so I'm beginning to suspect I have a good-ole defective antenna. I ordered a new high gain dot antenna and am going to give it a try.

Will post back with results.

Thanks for your time and assistance.

i have my antenna on my sound bar w/o issues. could be a bad one or pinched wire. now a big thing w/ these antenna's is making sure nothing is above them and that they are on a good ground plane... thats why when ppl lay one on a dash they suck they need to be on trunk/roof...for us thats either hood, music bar (if metal) or rollbar. i don';t like hood myself. you may need to mess w/ it some on the road till you get a good spot

Thumbs up

Got a new high-gain low profile antenna, mounted it on the driver's side behind the soundbar. Works 1000% better than the last and got rid of my drop outs. I think I either broke the existing antenna while installing it, or it was already cooked.
