Sirius Question.

Hi All,

Just bought a 2008 4 Door Jeep Wrangler, so far I Love it! Got the X model with a lot of extras.

Anyway, I had a Sirius unit in my old car, but it was a unit I purchased and had installed. I NEVER lost reception on it. My new Wrangler cuts out constantly. Is there a way to boost the signal, or perhaps move the antena?

I bought my JK this past Friday, the Sirius cuts on and off as I drive around curves, under trees, by a building, next to a hill, etc. The XM radio in my GMC Sierra seems to work a lot better.

Is there a way to boost the signal?

I mean, it is REALLY bad. I am actually thinking about putting my aftermarket unit in my Jeep

Maybe yours has something wrong with, antenna not connected, bad ground, etc. Might let the dealer check it before you yank it out.

Mine is not so bad that I'd toss it.

Regards,
Richard

I get it too. I LOVE my jeep but the overpriced mygig system was a sad disappointment to me. The navigation sucks even worse than the sirius. I don't use the satelite radio much, the one thing I like is downloading my cds, that's usually what I listen to else its the AM news station on my way into work.

I am going on month six with my rubi though, I still love it and wonder why it took me so long to discover this ride!

Where is the antennae mounted on the JK's? Because of the removable nature of the tops, I think they are mounted on the roll bar, under the top. This is not ideal for satellite radio. You may look at just moving the antennae out onto the top of the 3rd brake light, if possible to help with the reception. Just a completely uneducated thought. I have seen this done for GPS systems a few years ago with extended antennas for better reception.

I also just bought a new 08 Wrangler Unlimited. Was hoping to move my Sirius unit from my old vehicle, but there isn't a good place to mount the reciever in the Wrangler. I was thinking of getting the installed radio unit, but if the reception is bad. Do you have the in-dash model? or a seperate receiver?

Scott,

I had a separate unit in my old car that was great.

I now have the in car unit on my new Jeep and it SUCKS reception wise.

I think one of two things is happening.

When you put an antenna on the roof of your car for satellite, it actually makes the entire piece of metal a receiver for the signal....So you have a lot of surface area.... Depending on where the antenna is located we may have slim to no surface area to catch the signal.

Another issue could be Antena placment....If it doesnt have a clear shot at the sky....Your not going to get reception,....I personally think the first reason is the problem though.

For those installing EXTERNAL units, try to get the antena on the hood of your jeep....The signal can hit the meta there and trave to the antena

Do you have a place to put the external receiver? I have a standard six speed, it would not fit near the shifter, nor could I mount it near the glove box because of the airbag. The other spot i considered was on the dash, but it seemed to be in my face and not feesible.

I would rather have the in-stereo version, i will just have to keep in mind where i place the attenna.

They have suction cups that stick to the window. I would put it on the bottom left.

The Sirius antenna is on the roll bar: #2 in the photo is the antenna, #1 is the wiring harness for it.

Should be able to within the limitations of the wiring harness.

Why do ya think moving it would help????...Its not gonna get much clearer reception than where it is its right smack out on top of the vehicle......cloth and fiberglass make no difference to reception with sat radio....take yours in you have a reception prob ...most are traced to a bad connection, antenna or sirrius box which is a seperate unit.....Gary

what gary said. regardless of the top you have it has no impact on your satellite reception as the signal goes right through. get it checked at the dealer.

Mine works great until I go into a tunnel or under a highway overpass. No problems here. Won't use it after the free period is over. I don't pay for radio.

you could use a aftermarket antenna and put it on the hood if you think it would help, ive had both factory and aftermarket systems in jeeps and they all worked about the same

I have always been told that the more metal surrounding the antenna, the better. Reason being, is that the metal becomes a conductor for the signal. If that is true, than it's not in a great spot.

well it could help , but ive installed sat radios on boats and i just stick the antenna to the console of the boat which is fiberglass and they always work, but the instructions with the antenna do say to put it on metal

Did you move your antenna to the windshield? Mine is on the top of the roll-bar on the passenger side, it came that way.

Richard

Not sure if the instilliation was factory...(radio is) but it looks like a T antenna attached just above the mirror.

They know what it's worth, that's why it's free.

Maybe it'll get better as the recent merger with XM gets refined.

FWIW, I have XM in my yj, and I originally mounted my antenna to the roll bar under the top and got crap for signal. I moved it outside to right between the hood and the cowl and now I always have full signal.

i have XM radio that i move between my durango and '04 TJ. at first in the TJ i placed the external antenna on the passenger front A-post. the receception was decent, but my wife didn't like it there(thought it might blow off, with her driving it was a possibility. moved it to the hood/cowl area and got much better reception, also looked better there. only problems with the reception is around a lot of metal(bridges, overpasses, gas station canopy, etc)

I just moved my antenna from my dash to the roll bar above passenger and it doesn't cut out at all anymore. On the dash it was absolutely terrible but like I said now it is perfect.
