speaker replacement question

One of my dash speakers went out and needs replacing. For those who have replaced them, what size/kind did you put in and how do they sound?

I just put in a new Sony CDX GT510 and really want better sound that the stock speakers.

if you really want good sound, you need either mb quart, or rockford fosgate. for these type and size anyway. i believe the fronts are 4x7. try to get 3 ways too. much better range than shitty factory dual cones

the basic stock dash speaker size is a 4x6 oval. the 7 speaker package had the tweeter/woofer separates that fit in the same location.

the best upgrade you can do is to swap in a pair of 5.25" round speakers using an adapter plate that you can either make, or buy for a few bucks online.
while i could've made my own, for $9, i bought some adapters from www.mjmautoinnovations.com. if you end up shopping for a 4x6, be wary as almost all of the 4x6 coaxial speakers will not bolt up to the factory speaker locations and you will still have to use an adapter plate for them to fit.

mb makes a good speaker, rockfords are so-so. there are a thousand different brands out there and they all make different sounding and different qualities of speakers...it's really all up to your ear.

don't waste your time with looking for a "3-way" speaker. nothing is gained when someone makes a speaker that produces frequencies only dogs can hear. a quality 2way coaxial is all you need.

i personally went with a set of Kicker KS525s in the dash and the soundbar for their 'marine grade' composition and their larger than most tweeter, which achieves more crisp highs; both of which are ideal for an open top jeep.

whatever you put in the dash, i would match it in brand, model and size if possible. you will get the best balance of sound.

i guess you would also call this an opinion question, i like having a wider range of sound, as it works well with an easily adjustable deck for high variety taste in music. i would still reccomend a 3way if your goin with an oval shaped speaker, but again up to you. i went with 4x7 because i already had them and just cut up the mount on the stock speaker with a dremel and drill to fab little adapters. kickers produce excellent sound almost across the board, but can be pricy when your talking marine grade. do some research, but if you want good sound stay away from generics, and aim towards your desired sound, and not prices

it doesn't matter what speakers you put in with that crappy head unit(i do not recommend any sony product for car audio/video, all you are paying for is a four letter word "sony"). that being said, when it comes to speakers i have always been more than satisfied with infinity speakers like the kappa series, or if you have the cash i would go with a component set up like the kappa perfect's. mb quart, infinity, memphis audio all have great sound.

I replaced my factory speakers with Kenwoods and I am very impressed with the sound quality. I am not using a factory headunit, as I replaced it with an Alpine headunit.

jimbo, this is the link to the adapter plates for the 5.25" speakers in the dash of a TJ

http://www.mjmautoinnovations.com/sakj46t525.htm

like i said, you can make them yourself....thin sheet metal, thin wood, thin plastic chopping board, etc., but for what i think was $13 shipped for a set that is already measured and fabbed up....sometimes it's just easier to go the premade route.

when it comes to speakers...it's all opinion and personal preference. everyone hears something different...that's how all these companies stay in business.

audition as many different brands and models of speakers as you can in stores around town. it's not going to be the same effect as in your jeep, but it will give you some idea of what to consider.
i did that when i was shopping for my TJ speakers. i was able to listen to the Kickers at Circuit City and then went to ebay and got both brand new sets for $100 shipped vs. the $90 a pair they are in the store.

i got my infinity kappa perfect components for $110 shipped on ebay, normally they sell for close to $300, i saved over $700 on my full stereo by ordering off of ebay. what i recommend is to go to crutchfield.com and read all the "hands on research" for speakers, they also have a good amount of customer reviews, then when you find what you want go to ebay

another 220 or so on my amp
another 140 on my stereo
80 bucks on cables...
saved ~680 on my setup and thats shipped from ebay vs non shipped prices from websites...

if i bought my 6x9s from ebay i would have saved another 50-60 bucks...

Before I screwed it in I used zip ties and some tape to make it nice and clean

yup its much better to do it that way then have snakes all under ur dash. This way you wont have issues with wires going on their own and getting cought somewhere and getting ripped up.

Many people go around this and end up questioning why does their setup look like a mess.. this is the main reason.

I have a set of Polk db 521's that I'm waiting on the brackets to arrive to install in the dash. Put the same set in the roll bar and they sound pretty good, at least to my ears.

Nice thing about Crutchfield is they send the wiring harness for free, and shipping is free if you don't mind waiting a few extra days.

Ya they fit with the adapter rings they come with. It's a tight fit you really need to push on the speakers to get them to screw onto the adapters but they fit stock holes.

good choice. infinity's are known for their nice highs. if you have or plan to add a sub, i would just do another pair of 5.25"s for the soundbar. if no sub, then squeeze the 6.5"s in there for a hint of extra lowend....just keep in mind, coaxials are not designed to put out a lot of bass.

no, you can only do 5.25s in the front (without MAJOR fabbing). the 6.5"s fit in the soundbar.

i used zip-tie's to keep everything neat, i also soldered all of the connections. the reason i didn't use electrical tape is because when the tape worms up i tends to stretch and come undone, its not fun trying to get all that sticky adhesive stuff off of the wires.

some directly fit, some don't. sometimes an adapter plate or trimming is needed to make 6.5s fit in the pods. it really all depends on the brand of speaker. it's kinda dumb, but not all speaker manufacturers make the same size speaker with the same size mounting.

Like these:

According to specs, they're 7-1/10" tall.

maybe if you made some adapter plates you could cram them in there.
