Speakers?

Well, I blew a dash speaker today on the way to work (98 Rock was playing "I Wanna Rock"...so I did, LOL). What in the world are those things in there??? Anyone know if there's a NORMAL size speaker that'll go in the YJ dash? Got a soundbar already loaded with JBL GT's and once I figure out where to put the amp (dryness this summer being the concern) I have a sub that'll go under a seat...but I want some imaging so front speakers are a must. Anyone make a plate that adapts that goofy dash hole to something normal?

I pulled my stock speakers and cut the speaker grill plate thingy to mount some surface mount speakers. I put some 4" speakers there. It is raised up about a half inch off the surface. The door jam on the passenger door barely hits it when I close that door. Other than that, no problems. I just have to close that door slightly harder.

I don't know of anything else, but you can replace the stock speakers with ones with the same dimensions.

HI, new guy here but I figured I'd throw in since I've been researching this lately to upgrade the dash speakers in my 92 YJ. ( Still deciding if I want a sound bar.) According to Crutchfield either 4" or 4x6" will fit. (BTW, IF you buy from crutchfield, they will give you any adapters needed.) I plan on using 4x6" coaxials as they deliver better base than a round 4". If you go with a coax/triax, make sure your tweeters don't stick out past the speaker frame or you'll need to shim them/cut the grill.

I have some 4x6 Boston Plate speakers in my dash speaker location
they are great for that top end of the music frequencies..
I also have a Alpne 12 in sub in the boot so I have a really deep bass and a nice crisp top end.. If you have over head speakers then the 6x4 plates would be perfect for a sound filler.Personally I wouldnt go too cheap.. avoid pioneer..
Go for something like the BOSTONS or if you can afford it POLKS
its upto your wallet essesntially

OK, I got the amp and sub installed today along with the Alpine head...am I missing something or do you actually have to fold the windshield down and remove the dash to install new dash speakers? I've pulled the three small torx screws, and removed the three that hold the windshield lockplate tab thingy on, and no dice. What fun. At least the sub drowns out most of the rattling from the blown passenger plate speaker, and the JBLs in the soundbar are still working great!

In a YJ, you have to access the speakers from the bottom... When I did mine it was a huge pain! Put your head under the dash and look up at the speakers, you should be able to see the mounting hardware... Otherwise, you have to pull the dash . Up to you!

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

Hyanes YJ repair manual says to remove them from the back. The drivers side also needs to have the Emerency brake assy removed first. Getting ready to do mine soon.

Unfortunately the only way to access them from the "back" is from under the dash in the contorted head on the brake and clutch pedals position.

Is it too late to forget those speakers and mount some 61/2s somewhere else instead?

hey guys, it is a pain to install those speakers in a YJ. I worked for a retail car stero store and I hated putting those speakers in. The best advice I can tell you is have some deep well sockets and a lot of patience. No you do not have to remove the windshield. thats more work than it's worth. there are 4 bolts/ nuts holding on those speakers. it is a 4X6 speaker. I like the POLKS. Pioneer also makes a good 4x6. if anyone has any questions PM me.

all the fussing about pulling out the front speakers, guys cant we just go easy and put the centra pod speakers in from the quadratec mag. they just go right infront of yer shifter and come with or with out speakers. just got mine in and love them, much easier wiring right under the cd player then fussin around up under the dash with sockets flash lights etc.

yeah they are easier but dont do any deep water crossing or you will drown them

No doubt. The speakers are the least of your worries when you're in that deep.

Nah...I have had water in my lap a couple of times, even over the hood for a brief second once. That one made me a bit nervious. You could look at boat speakers too. They can handle more water.
