Specs for stock factory speakers...?

Not sure where to post this, already tried the TJ forum. Does anybody know the specs for the stock factory speakers on the 97 Wrangler? Two up front in dash, two in sound bar overhead. How many watts can they handle etc? A link to the info would be ideal.

i take it you want to add an amp to the factory speakers? they are as good as they can be running off the stereo, adding an amp won't do much at all and is a waist of money.

Trust me - you really don't want to keep the stock speakers. At least take a look at the rollbar speakers before you do anything else. In my '97 TJ I recently found those speakers to be literally falling apart. The cones were completely detached from the frames where the rubberized paper had disintegrated. The front speakers were intact but they are essentially junk. It is easy to replace the speakers and that is what I would suggest. I used Crutchfield.com (Doug can help) since they throw in some extras that make it even easier to swap the speakers out. You will be a lot happier if you can the stock stuff!

Stock speakers only handle MAYBE 15 watts of true RMS power. Some factory premium systems may be closer to 25 watts. Any 4-channel or 5-channel aftermarket amp will put out at least 40 watts per speaker. Doubling the rated power on a 15 year old paper cone speaker will not end well.

TJ's have 4x6" speakers in the dash, and 5.25" speakers in the soundbar. With these brackets, you can fit 5.25" speakers in the dash pretty easily, and 6.5" speakers will easily fit into your soundbar, you'll just have to drill new holes for the mounting screws. Use some sound deadening in the soundbar, and get baffles for the fronts. Then, you can add an amp if that's what you were looking to do. I would never recommend amplifying stock speakers beyond adding an aftermarket radio.

This project is becoming more involved. Is there a routine way to remove the speaker grills to visually inspect them? The cheapest pair of speakers for the sound bar at crutchfield is $40. Maybe I can live with the old front speakers because the back speakers do all the work anyway?

there are just 2 screws on each of the front speaker grills, and 4 on each of the soundbar speakers. the soundbar speakers do not do all the work.

I got that far on the front speaker(s), but there is a foam baffle, and then a black mesh screen that gets in the way. I shined a flashlight in there and saw what I could. I don't have any reason to think the front speaker(s) are damaged due to age. They don't sound any different. I have the hard top shell, so the interior has always been protected from the elements. If it was a rag top, then I'd be more concerned, like leaving a pair of home stereo speakers in the back of a pick-up truck for several years, then they'd most certainly be rotted out. Anyway the front speakers are down by the knees, and I only use them for listening to talk radio.

The back speakers in the sound bar are easy. They're also right behind the head of the driver and passenger, and the only speakers anybody in the back seat is going to hear. They're in surprising good shape. I could continue to use them the way the are, but I still want to find the specs on them to help with that decision... anybody have a source of info for that...?

they are not going to sound much better at all, an amp will make a small difference but it would be a better choice to replace the factory headunit when it comes down to cost. changing to better speakers is the most cost effective way to have some better sound. the first audio change i do to a car is always the headunit, fallowed by speakers with an amp and last is a sub and amp along with all new wiring.
