Stock Speaker Replacement

I have a 2002 Sport. Stock am/fm/cd/equalizer/ 4spkrs.
If I replace the stocks with the Kickers 4x6 and 5.25 as advertised at Quadratec, would there be any improvements? I have read about the other brands on this forum. Not planning on replacing the HU.

You probably would...but you'd also notice a difference if you upgraded to 5.25's in the front (you can pick up adapter plates for $15-40 and they require just a little modification to one of the brackets in each side of the dash) and 6.5's in the rollbar.

Don't expect too much with Stock power levels. Simply put the stock headunit is insufficient.

If your stuck on keeping stock headunit, research your purchase to get the best bang for your buck. Buy the speaker with the highest sensitivity you can find. I too agree with the previous two posters, going to a round speaker will only help things. Personally I like JL's speakers.

avoid Sony in the car audio business.

i'm a fan of infinity speakers, there kappa series give out great sound with the stock hu, i had kappa's in front and in the roll bar running a stock hu and it made a big difference in quality.

I found a replacement sound bar on Quadratec - VDP Six Speaker Overhead Soundbar in Textured Black. Have you looked at this one? Has anyone tried it? Any good?

I have heard mixed reviews on this, but I have it and found it to be a good addition to the stereo.

its crap don't waist your money on it, try to find one that doesn't have speakers in it and buy your own speakers for it.

I know that if you want good sound, you have to go with a more powerful HU.
Just trying to figure out what a speaker replacement only would do.
Thanks for the info.

Speaker replacement only will help...but it's still gonna sound like something's missing. I second the suggestion on replacing the headunit... what i'm considering is buying a marine headunit...so I won't have to worry so much if it rains on me while topless.

I just replaced my HU this past weekend with a Kenwood. I have to say that it makes a big difference. I researched buying a marine HU but found that for the money, there is still no guarantee getting water on it will keep it from frying so I went with the Kenwood KDC-MP345U. Its not fancy but has everything that I need and want, the iPod interface is pretty awesome and the price was right. I am also going to buy a Metra 99-9005B Black Waterproof Marine Radio Cover to put over it. You can find it on e-bay for 11.95 plus shipping. That is what one of the Crutchfield advisors suggested I get vice a marine radio to save money but of course the same one on Crutchfield was 40.00. The reason I'm on here now though is to research how to upgrade my current 5 1/4 Pioneers in my soundbar to 6 1/2 something betters.

Can you not use the stock HU and simply add an amp to boost the power to the speakers?

Before laughing at me, bear in mind the last time I messed with an automotive stereo was in the early 80's.

5 years ago this would have been true, but if you look at the stuff Sony is putting out today, they may be one of the best companies for bang for your buck. I had a whole subwoofer package for $250 (1200watt peak subs, 2 channel amp, and box) that hit absurdly hard.

And yes, you can keep the stock head unit, throw a line converter on the four speaker outs and then just put it into the back of the amp to boost your sound. In fact, most aftermarket HUs aren't putting out much more wattage then what the stock system does.

Sony is no better today than they were then. Their amps are very over-rated, decks are made cheaply and stop working all the time, etc... It's the truth, take it or leave it.

peak power means nothing!! the way they measure the peak is play a tone for 1 second and see much power it can handle without blowing the speaker/sub. you should look at the rms rating of your speaker/sub, this is the recommended factory setting, this rating is what will provide the best possible sound, yes you can go a little over the rms, but keep in mind it will lower the life of your speaker/sub.

i have a sub that runs at 1500watts rms, and 2500watts peak

you could have a max power of 1200watts but still have only 500rms watts.

sony is garbage when it comes to anything related to cars! your only paying for 4 letters.
