Subwoofer enclosure inside the stock center console?

Hello.

I'd like to install a 8" subwoofer inside the stock center console. For that I want to build a small enclosure that fits into the center console.
I have a 06 TJ with a stock sub. But that's not loud enough for me.

I just looked inside the center console and saw that the parking brake lever is a bit in the way.

Did you install a 8" subwoofer in the Center console before?
Perhaps you can post a drawing with the measurements of the enclosure that you build for that.

Thanks for your help!

Its not really for my TJ.
My GFs father has a TJ too.

But i will try it in my TJ.
A friend who works in a car hifi shop says that an additional "kick bass" from 70-120 Hz would be an improvement.

I found a write up for such an enclosure in another forum.
Today i bougth the material.
Tomorrow i will build it.

Where did you find this? I was going to attempt this. Got the materials then pulled the plastic liner out and saw about 10 different angles on it and decided it was out of my leauge to build something like that out of wood.

Indeed I understand the 70-120 Hz range. A lot of people don't understand the separation of frequencies for different drivers and blah blah blah..

There was another guy that had an aftermarket console sub on this forum not too long ago. Not sure if it is in the factory enclosure or in an MDF enclosure in the console though..

The subwoofer in the rear sounds better with only up to 70-80 Hz.
But then the range from 70-120 Hz is not loud enough.
That's why i'll try the center console sub with this range.

Yesterday I had the 8" sub in the center console. But that didn't Sound good.
It really needs a real enclosure.

BTW Do you know how to improve the front speakers?
I have some good 5.25" speakers there and they're much better than the stock ones.
But my friend said they will sound much better with something like an enclosure.
But there isn't enough room for that.

Yea use Something hard as a backing. Somehow.

Either the Mod Pods or the Q-forms kickpanel enclosures are going to give you the best imaging/staging. The Q-forms may be a little better as they're farther forward but they're also double the price.

THey're both low enough that it should make them pretty close to equidistant from the listeners. As I said, the q-forms may be a little better placement. Off-axis response from a good set of speakers should allow the sound to still seem like it's coming off the windshield "stage"

If u want optimal bass in ur jeep u would want to build a box behind the back seat then build a lid to close off the air space between ur tailgate and seat I did this in my jeep and I hit 130db with 1000w and 2 tens but if u for sure want to do it in ur middle console u will want to build an outer shell of ur console with mdf board to eliminate the flex that u would normally get from the plastic console also if the handbrake is in the way build a wedge to angle ur sub away from the handbrake enough to fit and should act as somewhat of a tunnel for the sound. If that did work build a floor in ur console high enough to face the sub down this will make the sub resinate across the floor thus makin it loader but this is just some ideas that should work

Today I built the enclosure.
I made everything with MDF.
The subwoofer chassis is 1.5" higher than in the thread in another forum that I posted before.

Tomorrow I'll try it in my TJ.

Here are some pics.

Wow this subwoofer in the center console sounds so good and deep!

When I drive with the opened softtop it's still loud enough. And that with only 200w RMS.

The 10" bandpass subwoofer in the rear with 600w RMS sounds louder and deeper in the parking lot. But when I drive +35 mph I can only hear the subwoofer in the center console.

A 10" might fit but for it to work efficiently it may require more space than this tiny enclosure has. Making an 8" in this box sound better than trying to fit a 10" in it.
