TJ Dash Speakers

planning on speaker upgrade soon in my '97 TJ

I have seen some people have changed out the stock 4x6 to 5.25.
I've seen the brackets, but was wondering... what else needs to be done for the swap?

I think the older TJ's you have to cut a piece of metal out of your way, I didn't have to do that part in mine!

As mentioned, there's a metal bracket to cut, but it's not that bad, then put in the adapter plate and hook up the speakers... Afaik, the depth on them is pretty much the same.. But, Idk. Mine fit fine. You can get some very nice metal adapter plates here...Nalin Manufacturing and support a great Jeeper

Not a problem. I'm not sure what your planning on using to cut the metal bar out, but i used a dremel and went through 4 blades, wore them down to nothing so keep that in mind. and the metal got super hot after it was cut.

Template for the conversion, in case you want to make your own and save time and money.

Typical material, anything you can mod on, steel, aluminum, plastic, etc.... thickness being that of a license plate.

Pretty straight forward, depending on the speakers, you may need to tweak the hole some.

correct me if i'm wrong but i think the stock tj sport speakers are components with a separate tweeter.

if i install a coax 5.25" speaker w/tweeter to replace my stock setup, should i remove the stock tweeter? or does the wiriring for the stock tweeter now hook up to the new speaker?

I bought the 33 Engineering ones and they worked great. Yep, there is not much to them and can be fabricated relatively easy if you have the means. I just have more money than I have time. Most of the time anyway.

So what did you end up doing? I've ordered some 4" alpines for the dash, not realizing that I had component speakers in there until tonight. Did you keep the tweeters in there and just get some 2-ways?

The 4" speakers came in. I ended up pulling the stock component set off of the plastic box, filled it with polyfill, and put the new speaker on. It fit exactly like the stock 4" did. The stereo comes in on Thursday so I can't test it yet. Hopefully it will sound ok, otherwise I'll end up mounting it open air like you and most others.

If you want to put a baffle behind your dash speakers, some people put filler material in there or you can buy baffles for $8 at Crutchfield:
Boom Mat 5-1/4-inch Speaker Baffles (Slim-line: 2-1/2" depth) Protect your speakers Regular and slim-line sizes at Crutchfield.com
