Touch screen install

Hey guys I have a 2002 TJ and was wanting to install a stereo with the touch screen.

I don't wanna spend 800 bucks on a in dash touch screen so I was wanting to get the type that the screen comes out and pops up. "Motorized" is the word I think lol.

I'm concerned about it working though. Does anyone have pics or information on an install like this, will it work, or will I have to do some modifications to be able to let the screen pop up???

Thanks

Most of the touch screen setups are double din which would require modification of the center dash bezel. Look in the TJ tech forum and search double din. Should come up with at least some pics. Or search google for double din in a TJ.

I'm going for a single din with 7" flip out touch screen . I don't want to drop big money on it because I'm hard on things . Once I find a head unit ill let ya know of any Modifications needed for the install . It should go right in being a single . There are a few threads on here about installing the dub. Din units and they look just about stock they did a great job on the install .

I have a one din, 7" flip out, touch screen. They are many of them on the market. The trick is that they have to be mounted forward about 1/2", to allow the screen to flip out in front of the AC vents. I also mounted a 1/2 din EQ in the extra din space. They are about $300 to $500 dollars. Mine is as follows, lots of options:

PERFORMANCE TEKNIQUE ICBM-SATLITE 7" Automobile Digital Panel TFT Touch Screen, In-Dash One Din, DVD/CD/MP3/MP4/WMA Player,AM/FM MPX Radio, Built-In GPS,USA/MEXICO/CANADA Maps Included, USB Port/SD Card Interface, AUX, BLUETOOTH, Car Steering, Dual Zone, CC LED Fully Motorized/Detachable Front Panel $289

The head unit is awesome. It is the best head unit that I have ever had in my life. THD is 1% at full volume. Be careful ordering electronics online though. If you get a HU online, and the box comes damaged, likely the HU will be effectively damaged too. With all the options on this unit, I can imagine that it is somewhat delicate.

I don't think this HU is the type that will handle a lot of abuse. I wouldn't want to try to do heavy off roading with it especially with the screen extended. But, the flip out screen works awesome. You can adjust the angle and it remembers. You can even run the stereo with the screen not extended. It is easy to just turn it completely off and the screen automatically retracts.

I have a 32GB SD card in mine. It plays concerts, Karaoke, MP3 and movies. Although, I don't watch movies will driving. The bluetooth is good. The GPS is awesome. It has USB and AUX. It has sub control too. I especially like the removable face plate. It comes with a case for it. The LED readout actually slowly morphs through the visual spectrum. It is really cool. It comes with a remote too. There are so many options on this radio, I couldn't even describe them all. The GPS has different voices, one touch favorites, restaurant and landmark searches and much more.

My Alarm is a new Viper. It has a blue led instead of the normal red.

The Bluetooth will be able to control the music. The Bluetooth automatically shuts the music off during a call, and resumes when the call ends. And you can pause it yourself, or go forward/backward in a playlist. The touchscreen allows you to answer, and hang up the call, and dial too. I'm not sure about USB, but it doesn't say it does, and I haven't tried it for that purpose. But, you can't use USB to monitor calls, so it would be dangerous trying to use USB, and then getting a call, while driving in your car. The Bluetooth allows both hands-free telephone calls and music control. The microphone is in the head unit. And, it is very clear.

This is the reason I setup my phone the way that I did. It is basically hands-free and it allows me to control the music better from the better interface with little distraction. Even the Bluetooth has its draw backs.

I was excited when I saw the Performance Teknique and all its options including 7" flip screen. Since then, I have seen larger flip screens, 7" flip screens from bigger name companies, but I haven't seen one with all my options. Most of them don't have GPS or an SD card. Yeah, now you have another comparison to consider, and the price isn't bad.

All good I'm going to check out a few local shops see if they can get me that unit if not I will order it .
I'm with you on ordering Electronics online kinda like Russian roulette .
Thanks

Yeah, I made a mod for charging my phone. I got tired of all the hanging wires getting in the way. You can see it in the picture. I'm not so long-winded today, so I'll just say, Good Luck. I hope you get it, and it works out well for you.
