Upgrade Audio in my JK!!

Hey everyone!!! I'm a proud new owner of a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited. It's our first Jeep and we LOVE it! However, we didn't upgrade the sound system and especially when we have the top and doors off it doesn't sound very good. I upgraded the (4) 6.5" speakers with MTX Thunder Dome 2 Way speakers. They definitely cleaned up the sound at max volume (Have to have it at max when on the road) but still isn't what i'm looking for. I would like it louder and maybe a little bass to kick for those great songs. I don't want a LOT of bass!! Just enough to hear those great bass drums in my Metallica!!!! Anyway, since I'm new to this Jeep thing, I want to do it right and make it look good. I saw the attached picture with what looks to be like a 10" Sub maybe? Obviously space is at a premium and I don't want to take up too much of my storage space. Maybe some of you can share some of the set ups you've seen or get me some advice?

Thanks for the help!

You'll need an amp for your full range speakers... also the sub you buy will also need juice. 5 channel amp or 2 amps and you'll be rocking.

By just changing the speakers you only put a band-aid on the problem. The problem is that all the equipment in the system is crap. To do it right, have to change everything.

You dont really need an amp for the speakers. A head unit with more watts is better imo. I also bought the Boss 8" flat sub/amp combo for $100 on amazon. Plenty of bass and I put it under the passenger seat. Sounds great topless and it is only at 3/4 sound. Got a jvc HU.

The problem with the HU running the 4 speakers is the fact that you are still underpowering them. Once you get to a certain level, you'll get distorted sound. Very few speakers will run optimally on 16 to 22 watts rms that an aftermarket deck will put out (with a high THD). If you want more clean power with low THD, you need an amp.

But to each his own. I learned the hard way and always just did everything correctly right off the bat. It helps to have a few bucks laying around

"Turning it up, when topless" is a relative term. Me "turning it up" is most likely different that others. To turn it up and actually hear every note with the top off... costs money.

the amp is a alpine 4 channel ktp-455 they have a ktp-455u which is universal and a ktp-455a which is meant for a alpine head unit. I personally wouldnt put the amp their right behind the glove box is a large enough hole for it to have some room to breath. Once you put stuff in the glove box you cut down on its cooling and can cause the amp to die. I have installed a few of these right behind the glove box and it works great i think iv done 4 or 5 jeeps with them. As my last job was a installer doing audio and car starters and security systems. But its a awesome amp for mid level systems small and compact. One other recommendation is the front speakers you said you replaced them with 2ways im assuming you just replaced the speaker them self not the tweeter. I wouldnt amp the factory tweeter they have problems at higher power. So you have two options replace them too. I recommend a component set wich will cost more or you can run speaker wire from the radio output to the tweeter and run the amp to the speakers only.

Zach, will that amp plug into the factory head unit on a 2012? Its not the upgraded Infinity system, but I want to keep the factory deck for appearance and also the uconnect. I'm looking for an economical way to boost my sound without tearing everything out of the interior if possible.

It does not get hot. Gain is set just past half - glove box is as good as place as any for this amp.

KTP-445 has speaker level inputs, so yes - just run the speaker outputs from the head unit to the inputs on the amp. It might also negate the need for a remote turn on wire, some of Pioneer's amps use the voltage from the speaker outputs to activate the turn-on relay.

As previous person said yes only down fall is you will have to cut the factory wiring all 8 speaker wires in half but you can always reconnect later when doing this I use quick connects to make it easier to switch back don't have to worry about cutting two short but yes it is possible you will want the ktp-455u and on the end with the Eva's you will want to cut the rcas off I always leave a little room incase you ever reuse the amp those wires will go to the radio side and the longer speaker wires will go to the car side harness some people have said that the amp will auto turn on with no remote I have never tried as if it stays on for some reason your battery will die you can just run the amp turn on to your cig lighter with is in easy access with radio out use 2 female quick connects to a 3 amp fuse that way your safe if it ever shorts out simple install you may need some speaker wire to run from the radio to the amp. The amps wiring is short I use speed wire all 8 speaker wires in one wire looks neater but that's about all you will have to change settings and tune it but Manuel will explain that

Hit the "space" button twice after the word where you want a period and it will insert it for you! Not too annoying that way.

Not really their are other option though. But size and price it seems to be best way to go. First off you don't need a amp wiring kit so that will save like 80 bucks. Unless you want to run high end speakers it's the only one I've seen in that style. Is their a reason you don't like that one. Personally I'm running two alpine PDX amps due to high end speakers and sub. Mine are under the front seats. One one each side.

Check out the Rockford Fosgate PBR line. Really small, will fit under/in dash and come in 1, 2 or 4 channel models with speaker level inputs. Also ARC makes small amps as well. Believe it or not, the motorcycle industry is driving this new class of small but powerful amps and they sound really good.
