Upgrading the sound system in a tj

I'm looking for the cheapest way to get a little better sound quality in my 98 Tj. it already has a Kenwood stereo but that's about it. it only has two speakers total, those are the ones under the dash. I don't really know where I would put any more speakers or subs. Anyone have any experience with this? Any advice would be great, thanks!

Cheapest would be to add a pair of 6x9 to the back. Put them in some generic speaker boxes. If you have an insta trunk set them on that. If not you can make one out of wood to set them on. Pointed up with a top on, gives you more sound. Pointed forward, with the back seat folded down would be best. Next would be to include an upgraded pair of 5.5 speakers in the dash. Not earth shacking, but at least you'll have tunes you can hear. You did say cheapest. Bang for the buck on the low price end is 6x9's.

Alright I'll look into that. I'm in highschool and jobless at the moment that's why I said money is tight. Just applied for a job though and if I get it every one of my paychecks will be going into my Jeep.

go with a new set of speakers, the stock ones are garbage. if you have enough money than go with some speaker pods.

the best thing to do is to save up enough cash to do it right. front speakers rear speakers, wiring, amp(?)

these pods are a reasonable price(i suggest not going with the VDP speakers, or the low end kicker speakers you see on quadratec)

Vertically Driven Products 53501 - VDP Supreme Sound Wedges without Speakers for 97-06 Jeep Wrangler TJ - Quadratec

i would say save at least $200-$250. that will get you a set of pods, speakers for the pods and new front speakers.

you can find cheaper 6x9's but these sounded good, especially for the price.
Polk Audio DB 691 Car speaker - 100 Watt - about 100.00 bucks
6x9 boxes 25-35 bucks or make them yourself. a 2"x4" board of mdf will cost about 9-11 bucks at the orange or green box stores. Don't stress on super airtight with a budget set like these. Heck mine survived water and quite a few drops out of a parked Jeep. And I had actually just drilled a hole in the back to run the wires. Still sounded fine.
Polk Audio db 5" speakers will fit in the dash. about 50 bucks. You need to make a bracket or buy one for about 10 bucks, if you want to put 5" speakers in the dash. It's not hard. But not the best bang for the buck improvement. The spot is a terrible place for the speakers (1/3 or 1/4 of the speaker output area is covered by solid plastic).
Ive used both and they got me by just running off a head unit. But if you crank them they will distort. For that you need an amp. Go listen to some speakers and see what you like. Pioneer makes decent lower price speakers, I'm sure there are others as well. Back in the old days Pioneer rocked.
Remember, if you make your own 6x9 boxes...ugly has less of a chance of being stolen. Stealth stereos are better than no stereos. With 6x9 in back and 5" up front you will still have to fade your stereo toward the front quite a bit, as the 6x9 produce way more sound than the dash.
Keepin it cheap. When you have money saved up, start looking at your dream system. But you'll probably be looking more at tires and lifts and wheels. It is a Jeep after all. At least this gets you some basic tunes you can hear at freeway speeds.

I would install some better 5.25" speakers in the front with additional tweeters on the dash.
IMO rear speakers sound bad. The stage is in the front.

You can build a small woodn subwoofer housing inside the center console.
There fits a 8" subwoofer.
Subwoofer enclosure inside the stock center console?

With a 4ch amp with about 4x 75W you should be fine.
Thats 2x 75W for the front and about 1x 200W (bridged) for the subwoofer.

If you buy used parts all that should cost less than 100$.
