USB Music Source

Is anyone using the USB connection for music in the 2013 Wrangler? If so, are you using an Android device or a thumb drive?

I've ripped about 100 CDs to MP3 files on my computer at the highest quality and will be transferring them to either a Samsung Galaxy player or a thumb drive. I tested a thumb drive this morning and could not get it to play...but I'm thinking that could have been because the drive is formatted NTFS rather than Fat32.

When I first turn on the radio with the USB drive connected and press AUX, I get "UCI Initializing" and then "Device Not Available". If I press AUX after that, I just get a "No Disc" message.

Questions:

1) If using a thumb drive, does it have to be formatted Fat32?

2) What is the best folder sequence to use? I currently have them listed by artist/album/songs. It seems like they should be transferred to the drive that way rather than in a single music folder (music/artist/album/songs). Yes?

3) Is anyone using a Samsung Galaxy player via USB? I will have one of those this afternoon but have been reading all kinds of reports about it not being compatible with a lot of vehicle systems. I refuse to get an iPad, iPod or any other Apple-related iThing. I use Android pads and phones.

I bought a mini 8gb usb flash drive and it works great. Make sure you get a mini drive. I used a standard size at first and my hand always hit it when i turned the wheel. My head unit is a Kenwood DDX-419, it will recognize only 50 folders on a flash, and 5000 individual files. So i have 5 different folders for different genres of music.

Best part is the mini flash was on sale at walmart for $3.

Im putting in the polk dxi speakers in this weekend

So I've tried using a new Samsung Galaxy 4.2 Player with a 32Gb card. I've loaded music on both the internal device memory and also on the card. The jeep seems to recognize the device but I keep getting this message: "Device Empty." As soon as I unmount it, it just says "Device Not Available" which is what I would expect. Has anyone else tried a Samsung phone or player?

I will try the USB drive when it gets here this afternoon.

What head unit are you using?

The Kenwood ddx419 works great. It will stream pandora via bluetooth. Only problem is it doesnt show the artist or song currently playing on the pandora screen. The hu is built more for iphone support. But otherwise its awesome

It's the 130 with UConnect and Sirius. As I said, I am trying to connect via USB because that is substantially higher quality audio than either bluetooth or the auxiliary connection. My Droid Bionic streams fine via bluetooth...but the head unit will not even recognize it on USB. At least it recognizes the Samsung player...but nothing on it.

Something I've had to do in the past is create a standard form of music hierarchy. Sort through folders for genre, or up/down for different artist/songs.

/music/genre/artist - album - song

On some head units I've had to create dot files forcing the head unit to find the files in question. The dot file forces a head unit which uses an embedded Linux structure to find and load the file first, then read in the resulting directory for /music/
".is_audio_player"

Well, to actually shed some light onto the situation for you, I found this on another Chrysler forum (Challengertalk.com). From the sounds of it, you can use any flash drive under 32Gb so long as it is formatted as Fat32, all the music is in mp3 format, and the drive has at least one .jpg file. I didn't look into the last part, though a few posts down, someone mentions that they had success without the .jpg file.

Hope this helps!

I was able to get it to work with a 32Gb thumb drive that is about the size of a fingernail. It only sticks out from the USB connection about 1/4 inch...so it's going to live there unless I want to add music to it. I was able to scroll through all the albums, artists, and songs using the radio buttons and steering wheel buttons. All the info is shown on the radio display. It's like having a hard drive in the head unit.

The only bad thing I discovered is that the signal level from the USB port is VERY low. I don't think there is a way to increase the input level. I cranked it all the way to max and it was fairly loud but probably not loud enough to enjoy with no windows. Has anyone else noticed low levels on the USB connection? Using bluetooth, the levels were fine.

So it looks like I will be adding an amp when I replace the speakers. I already have a new sub and 500-watt amp for the sub...and Polk speakers for the dash and sound bar...but I guess I will order a 4-channel amp for the dash and soundbar speakers so I don't have to turn the head unit up to the point of distortion. I've been waiting for decent weather to install everything...and it looks like warm weather is finally on the way for Moab in about 8-10 days.

Thanks for the help.

Does anyone know if there is an output level difference between a USB flash drive and an android or ipod player? Do you have to turn the volume up more when using USB as compared to when listening to Sirius?

1) yes there is a signal difference between the USB / iPod vs Sirius, cd, HDD etc.
2) Is there anything that you can do about it, not really. The reason why is that the radio SW is what sets up the volume for each source so it isn't a Uconnect thing. The Uconnect has an audio output of 1 volt, doesn't matter if its USB or iPod audio. The radio SW then sets the level going into the internal amp.

So what you are saying is that the radio will give the same volume whether it is an ipod/android or thumb drive on the USB connection? I was trying to figure out if it might help to get a different USB thumb drive or maybe even a small hard drive that might have a higher signal output...which obviously will not help if all USB output is at the same level from different devices.

If the signal is the same, then everyone must have to turn up the volume considerably when listening to their ipods...as compared to sirius or CD. I had to turn the volume almost to max using the USB thumb drive to get sound levels approaching what I get from Sirius at about half volume.

ok...this is weird. When I plugged the USB thumb drive into the stereo the other day, the volume was very low compared to the same volume setting with other sources. This morning, I tried it again and the volume was almost equal to the other sources at identical settings.
