Where to mount

I have a 2000 Sahara TJ and was wondering where you folks have mounted your 2 meter radio (Yaesu). The console area is out of the question due to auto trans. It would look good mounted to my hard top overhead except for when taking down the top.Top of the dash has the air vents in the middle.Above the steering wheel on the drivers side of the dash is uneven for mounting the factory bracket.I'm sure this has been brought up before, but curious how some of the creative ways this has been done.

What model radio?
I mounted the head unit of an FT-8100 in the coin tray above the center vents. Main body is on the right kick panel.

Using an Arizona Rocky Road overhead mount, I have both my Yaesu FT2900R and Uniden CB mounted up & out of the way at eye level. I've done it like this in two different TJs and it works very well. Arizona's mount allows the wiring to be run inside so it doesn't show. No holes need to be drilled into the Jeep either, its bolts thread into the threaded bolt holes already present in the rollbar above the side windows.

You can see Arizona's mount at http://www.arizonarockyroad.com/radiomounts.html

Time, both Jerry and myself have TJ's like yours.
The other option is hang it on the side of the center console by the shifter, or mount it inside the console storage. We like them where it is easy to see the faceplate.

I mounted XM Radio in the glove box, TJ '99 Sahara. A bit inconvenient to reach, but I'm 6-4 and long arms help. Best advantage is ability to hide & lock when the top is off and parked at the mall, arena, etc. Out of sight = Out of mind, but a smart thief recognizes the antenna mount. It's been good for 3+ years so far.

Thanx for eveyones feed back.....I actually mounted it in the middle of the top of the dash.Their was a rubber insert that I took out leaving it flat enough to use some heavy duty velcro. After going over some speed bumps the radio stayed in place with the coax and wires running between the winshield and dash.

Dave, I like the location, but not the mounting. Velcro holds fine on the road, in an accident it's going to start flying.

I'd bolt the bracket down. You could cut some slanted slots in the side bracket so instead of fully unscrewing the mounting screws on the side, you just need to loosen them.

Welcome to ham Jeeping.
