Where to mount a CB radio?

hi,

today i ordered a small-sized CB radio.

but i don´t really know where to mount it.
perhaps i will put it between the center console and the driver´s seat? oh no there is the sub...

where did you mount your CB radios in your TJ?

for the antenna i still have a place.

thanks for your advice.

Best place in my opinion would be an overhead console but we stuck Amy's on her dash mounted to the little tray.

i often drive with opened softtop. i never want an overhead console.

the cb radio is only 3.5 centimeters (about 1 1/3 inch) high.
perhaps i´ll mount it like this:

the best place would be somewhere in/on/under the dashboard, but i don´t hink that i find enough space there.

That thing is gonna take a serious beating if you mount that there. After putting your seat up and down 10,000 times, it will probably wear a hole in the seat and you may actually rip it out off the side of the console if you slam your seat down hard enough.

Just a thought.

if passengers go to the rear they always step in on the passengers side. i never put the driver´s side seat up.
99% of the time i drive without the rear seats.

but i´ll search for a better place when i got the radio.
that´s why i started this thread...

Take out the little rubber thing, on your dash. Outline it on a piece of 1/2" plywood, cut it out, and drop the plywood into the little bin, on your dash. Velcro your piece of plywood into the hole. Now screw your CB bracket onto the plywood. Now mount your CB onto your bracket,,,,,,,,,,,,,and presto, your CB is mounted to your dash........... Yankee ingenuity, at its best.

Here it is, in real time pictography.

If you are in a questionable area, just unvelcro it, and hide it.

It pops right out of the recessed area, because you velcroed it in there.........duhhh.

thanks for the pic bluvikng, but i don´t want to mount t in that position. here in my city they steal car electronic very often. that´s why i will hide the cb radio as good as possible.

oh no, i see that i forgot one important thing... i need a speaker for the radio... and a place to mount that speaker...

I have mine mounted on top of the dash. Seeing as you don't want to do that, what about in the center arm rest console? It will be hidden from thieves, yet accessible.

What frequencies and how much power are you allowed?
Our CB regulations are asinine here.

Intersting thread.

I just bought my 07 Wrangler X and was looking for a place to install my CB Cobra 25 wx/st. It's too big to place anywhere.

I was thinking under the sterring column and I may try that but I don't want it to interfer with my foot moving from the gas to the brake and back.

I thought about on top of the dash but here in So Cal that would be an invitation...and with the soft top, easy pickings.

Eric,

You state that you drive open top a lot. Mounting the CB between your seat and console is a bad idea. Why?

The speaker is on the bottom. The speaker will be shooting right in to the seat, thus muffling the sound. Unless you run an external speaker, you will have a very hard time hearing anything, even at trail speed, not mentioning highway speeds. I have mine mounted on the passenger side shifter console, upside down (hard to explain without a photo, but with the bottom of the CB facing the passenger side) and it's hard to hear at highway speeds like that.

My suggestion would be to mount under a seat with an external speaker with a volume control on it. The speaker can be easily hidden when not in use, pull it out when needed. Volume control on the speaker is nice since you probably won't need to change any other settings on the fly. Mike can come up between the seats and lay in the console.

Eric,

Yes, I know the radio has a volume control. The reason I stated a speaker with volume control is this:

If the radio is under your seat, then making any adjustments are a PITA when moving. Since usually most groups don't change channels or anything on the fly, then everything is set up and does not need adjustment. However, as your speed changes, so does the wind noise from running topless. That is why I said a volume control on your speaker. You can adjust the volume based on your speed, just like the stereo.
