Why am I hearing spanish and 60's horror movies on my cb?

So I just got my cb wired up now that I finally got my swr meter and 3' coax in today. apparently my swr meter doesnt work very well cause I had to smack it a few times to get it to move the needle but it looked like about 1.2. so I fire her up and what do you know I can hear people, alright cool. so I hear maybe 1 trucker channel, and about 10 or 12 channels with a ton of spanish I don't understand. Then something that sounds like "war of the worlds" with sound effects and weird voices and stuff. okay... I mess around with my gain and squelch and all that, yea yea. well I am still not getting anything real clear. So I get my buddy to get on and we tried on 2 channels and I couldn't pick him up at all. he is about a mile away from me maybe a little more. But what I want to know, is how am I picking up all this garbage but not him? I live in rural PA, there is literally nothing around me. maybe 1000 people in 5 sq miles. so I shouldn't be getting anything that I am getting. I just want to know what the heck is going on... haha.

In the CB & HAM worlds, it's called "Skip" or "Propagation." This occurs at certain times when there is what they call "Sun-Spots" which aid in causing signals from CB's, HAM radios & other types of transmitters to essentially "skip." Skip is when the signal leaves the transmitting antenna, bounces off of the atmosphere, then bounces off the ground, then bounces off the atmosphere like a bouncing ball or skipping rock.

So in turn, when this happens, a signal from say "Texas" can land in "Oklahoma" then land in "Nebraska", etc... That's why you here all of that. When this happens, I hear Mexico in the receive of my CB alot.

Clear as mud?

Yep. I had heard of skip and knew what it was but still kind of annoying. Haha. I'm going to try and retune it tomorrow. I didn't mess with the tip at all.

I'm ripping through my dash trying to fix my dash illumination at we speak. Already checked fuses and all that. It's been out for over a year. Stereo installer screwed it up somehow. Haha. So far I have found two loose grounds and 4 wires that aren't connected to anything.

LOL, I fully understand. Just turn your RF gain down to about 3/4 of the way up & turn your squelch up to drown it out. Setting it up like that, you will still be able to hear the local people.

That's always enough to tick ya off, & get pretty annoying to repair as well.

Where did you get the radio? Sounds a little like it may have upper and / or lower channels installed. If you can't talk one (1) mile, you may not even be on the same frequency as your buddy even if it appears you are on the same channel. Are there any extra switches or knobs on the back or side of the chassis? Did you try talking to him from a couple hundred feet away? There are lots of modified radios out there that have 40 channels above and 40 channels below the standard CB band. It's not legal, but it seems the FCC gave up on the 10 & 11 meter band years ago. If you are above or below the CB band with your radio, you aren't going to talk to your buddy from 10 feet away. That may explain all the Spanish speaking (not that there is none on the CB band!!).
