Wiring line output converter

I am putting an amp and sub that I have lying around my garage in my 97. I do not want to change out the headunit, mostly because it is a tape deck that I don't think anyone will want to steal, and because I like the factory original look.

I am looking at the line output converters so I can just tap into the soundbar speakers. Some of them have a remote output turn on for the amp. My question is, do I run a constant 12V to the converter or a switched 12V. It sounds like the only time the remote out will turn on the amp is when there is an actual signal on the speaker input. If this is true, will I be draining my battery if just tap the 12V from the battery that I am running to the amp?
