Wiring Test - ok, this is weird

I'm installing a Cobra 18 WX ST II.

This model has 3 wires coming out the back, and per the instructions:

Black - ground
Orange- to cigarette lighter or battery
Red - 12V accessory line with fuse

When I was doing a rough install to test SWR I ran the black to the battery negative, and ran the other 2 to the battery positive. All well, and I could have gone this way for the final install, but decided I wanted my CB keyed off the ignition.

So, per the instruction, I wired it this way and did a another test:
Black - chassis ground
Orange - to battery positive
Red - to cigarette lighter.

Tested and verified the CB only came on w/ the ignition turned on.

Now here is the weird part.....after the test I realized I'd never connected the orange to the battery. So the CB worked with only the black and red wires hooked up. WTF?

Using the colors I'm used to when wiring up electronics, red means battery and orange means "on w/ ignition" connection.

Anyways, if it came on with only 2 wires connected, what I the point of the 3rd?

Hope I'm making sense.

Just curious, is the red wire thicker than the orange wire? For future reference the "hot" wire or "constant" is usually thicker and red. The "turn on" wire is thinner and a diiferent color (yellow, orange, I've even seen blue)

The wire in question is a "memory" wire. Not a trigger wire. If I remember correctly, they're all the same gauge.
