From the brocure it says the width is 5.5", height is 1.6" but it doesn't give the depth of the control head. From the pic I would say about 1.5 to 2" with the knobs. hth.

I called Yaesu's tech support right after I posted this thread (nice people to talk to btw). The measurements I got were approx 5.25 wide and 1.25" deep including knobs.

Pulling the trigger on my ham radio purchase next week.

The Ft-8800 is an awesome radio. I have been very pleased with mine. The only neg I have is the third party programming software from RT Systems.

But what are you going to do? My new Icom 208H uses third-party from RT as it turns out as well!

I've been looking at the FT-8800. I just got a great recommendation for the FT-8900, which isn't much more money.

Yeah, I had a buddy that managed to buy his when they were on sale and had some rebate coupon. For something like $30 more he got the 8900 with 6M & 10M.

I have yet to upgrade my license and don't plan on working HF mobile so the 8800 works for me.

FT-8800R vs FT-8900R

Remember that 10M & 6M will require different antennas. How many antenna are you going to run on your Jeep?

I ran a Tri-Band Kenwood radio (TM-742) with a 6/2/440 tri-band antenna for awhile in my truck. I'm not sure if anyone make a four band. The tri-band antenna is longer, but I don't think it works as well as the normal 2/440 antennas.

I dual band I have for the Jeep sticks up just high enough and does not hit anything. I think that tri-band might. I did not hear much on 6m FM hear in the DFW area either. If the 8900 is a lot more, I'm not sure if it would be worth it for what you get.

Did you read any reviews on them on EHAM?

I read several reviews on both the 8800 and the 8900. The current pricing on the 8800 is around 365 and the price on the 8900 is at 415.00
