Hey Tiny,
I've scrolled the thread when is the date? You guys are 5 hours away but it might make for an interesting long weekend trip from NorCal.

Ok guys, I'm a pushy little bugger. Who's coming? Who's maybe coming? I'm trying to put together something special for you all so I'd like to have a bit of a head count so I don't end up trying to make six more the week before.

Ditto - and I will have 2 kids in tow. No camping for me though. Not with both girls and no wife to help out.

Tiny,

I'm in for sure. I don't know who else from AZ will be tagging along, but I'll try to get Donnie and Kyle to commit.

I have that weekend open but have few questions.
1) Where will we camp as going to this run will be all about meeting everyone and hanging out for me. ("all the trails can be done by a rig on 33's" Room for trucks w/trailers and Motorhomes?
2) Fire restrictions and I understand nobody can answer this but it could screw up everything.
3) Travel from camp spot to trail heads. How far? My YJ is licensed, registered, and insured in AZ but I am not sure how the Republic of CA will like it on their streets
4) A Garmin trac file from a local spot we will pass through from AZ to the camp spot would be great.

I would be up for it too, But I will drive the JK up there and pack a bunch of camping crap in it. I hope the JK will handle those trails. I am up for "roughin" it without the Motorhome.

Hackle,

I'll start making some calls to see if I can find out about the fire restrictions, and I think Brian said where he'd be camping. I'm planning on getting up there in the next few weeks and I know Chuck and Eric can give you a better idea where everything is located, so we'll get the info to you.

The trail heads seem pretty close, but if it's tagged I don't see as there's a problem. We'll use Jack in back as bait and the cops'll get him,

As of now there are no fire restrictions. If that changes I will let you know. Brian will be camping at Hanna flats which is a good idea and I know a truck/trailer can get/stay there just fine and believe it is doable in a motor home as well. We'll check it out next time we are up. You can reach 90% of the trails with no paved driving, but even then the law enforcement is pretty laid back up there. I routinely see "trail only" rigs travelling on the paved to get to different trails.

Joe and I talked about this today and what we may do is use my truck and trailer to haul his JK over. This will give him more packing room to camp and we can both help out on fuel. We will see what happens as the time gets closer. Thanks for all the info.

Nice, I was hoping some more of us from over here would be down for this one. Like we talked about the other day it would be perfect for the JK to get to play a little.

Jim it looks to be about 6 hours from us based on just quick mapping I had looked at before. I would imagine I'll be driving out, but who knows might be able to tow.

ooooooh i guess ill come along. hahaha I know the area very well. Id be up for a night run too. gold mountain at night is a blast.

if you guys from AZ are towing the jeeps up, Make sure the tow rigs are working well. I dont know how many time i had to go help friends towing up the mountain. from brakes catching on fire to overheating. Holcomb Valley campground is a good place to camp as well. less people and smack dab in the middle of a bunch of trails.

Camp fires may be an issure that time of year. Things will be Strict. there is also a possibility of them shutting down the mountain to off road use this year as well. as soon as i hear i will post up. but it wouldnt be a bad idea to make a plan B due to the lack of rain.
Im really hoping we get alot of Thunderstorms this year to keep the trails open.

Definitely keep us up to date on any closures up there. I'd hate for all of us to drive up and out there and have to turn around and then have 20 people stay at Tiny's house for the weekend.

Definitely makes it more interesting. However if it every starts raining in some of the washes we run in I'm getting the hell out of there and leaving the jeep. It's insured.

Holcomb Valley is a nice campground and it is a bit more centrally located, but it has a few down sides. The first is that there are only two spaces that will fit my 31' motor home; number two is that there is no water there. Half of Hanna Flats is resolvable through Reserve America, there are bathrooms with flush toilets and showers (and water to refill my tanks), and the majority of the spaces will fit my rig. Plus, there are hosts there that do a great job of watching the place. There is also plenty of open camping up there, but you can't have a fire. I've already reserved my spot at Hanna Flats.

What I was trying to say was that there is plenty of camping outside of the established campgrounds. You can pick a spot alongside of the trail and set up camp in a lot of places, but they do not allow open fires in these areas.

Hanna flats rarely bans campfires, the only time they do is when the whole mountain is closed to campfires. As a matter of fact, when we were there for July 4th week last year, they were comming around and asking everyone to have a camp fire and use the wood that was piled up in several areas around camp. They had cut down a number of trees that were damaged by beetles and wanted it burned.

Pretty much all the campgrounds allow open fires unless the whole mountain is closed to them. It's been pretty dry this year and it wouldn't surprise me if they banned all open fires this summer. They haven't done that in many years (to the best of my knowledge) but the guys that have places up there would know better.

In my previous post, "resolvable" = reservable

Good stuff to know unlimited.

Hey Tiny, what cabins are you staying in? How big are they? What's the cost? Hell it might be better for Joe, Jim, and I just to get a cabin so we don't have to haul all of our shite out there.
