Jeep hunting

So my wife and I are looking to get a new toy. We have $3000 to spend and are aiming for a YJ with a hard top, preferably a V6 but not a must. I have noticed that market value out here seems to be the highest in the country. Is it a reach to think that we can get something decent with $3k cash?

With the YJ, can anyone let me in on tips, things to look for, etc? Other than the research I do on my own, I don't know much about these things.

No v6, straight 6 though. You should be able to find a yj, but will most likely be a 4cy, soft top for 3k. Or at least that's what they go for here .

Just the figures when I bought mine up here in yavapai county-
1995, 4cyl, softtop, 37k(actual mileage)......

translated to $7000(36month @5.99%) from the used lot of a Chrysler/dodge/jeep dealer in cottonwood.

Oops, my bad. Saying V6 is a habit even when the engine isn't REALLY a V.
I am almost expecting to end up with a soft top and no A/C for the amount we are spending. We can always buy a hard top later, there isn't too much summer left and I would be driving another car with A/C until temps cool down.

The asking prices down here are inflated though. Do most people selling a Wrangler actually get higher than book value in Arizona? Or are most of them just dreaming? That's the one thing I hate about buying used private-party vehicles is making an offer that's fair but well below asking price and being told to pound sand.

Can I solicit your opinion? Given the age of this beast, do you think that $3000 would be too much of a lowball offer? Considering the age and lack of things like a top and A/C, I don't think it's too bad but my buddy tells me I'm being a jerk if I offer $3k.
