Hey guys, my first post here is my TJ messing up haha. I drove it all last winter with the 4x4 on, with no problems, switching back to 2wd on clear roads to save gas, etc, no problems. Then the truck sat all year, literally went under 20 miles the whole year. I am going to either sell it or drive it this winter so I wanted to see if the 4x4 works. Well... when I put it in 4x4 and turn tightly it jumps. This isn't the "death wobble" this is at low speeds when turning tightly, does this in 4x4hi and lo. Very similar to when the viscous coupling in my friends 249 transfer case failed. My jeep has a 231 transfer case though. To fix the 249, we swapped to a 242, and when we first put it in, the linkage wasn't adjusted corrected and we got some of the hopping like I am getting now because it wasn't fully engaged.

Is it possible my linkage came out of whack by a little? Looking under the truck the linkage looks like may have moved a bit less than a 1/4 of an inch.

What is the correct way to adjust the TC linkage?

The truck has never been wheeled and I would venture 70k of its 73k miles were done in 2wd mode.

Don't panicpaul it may be nothing at all. When it "jumps" while you're turning left or right in 4x4, are you by any chance on a paved or other high traction road surface? If so, that's 100% normal. The Wrangler's 4x4 system is strictly a part-time 4x4 system designed solely for offroad or low traction road surface use only. That is because a part-time 4x4 system locks the front and rear axles together and when you turn on a high traction surface, the front tires are prevented from rotating faster than the rear tires which causes it to "crow-hop" during a turn. Keep it in 2wd on a high traction road surface.

Any TJ will do the same in tight turns when 4x4 is engaged on good traction pavement. This is normal. 4x4 is supposed to be used only on slippery surfaces.

X2, even if it seems slick or low traction, it may not be.

Even a paved road that is wet from rain has too much traction for the very aggressive part-time type of 4x4 system the Wrangler uses.

bast way to test that i've found when it was snowing was to bring it up to exactly 10mph and slam on the brakes, if it skids i use fwd if it stops i use 2wd. Try this first on the surface ur on if it skids and u still have the jump then there might be something wrong but I would still be skeptical

It was a freshly paved asphalt parking lot. I guess I never turned it on when it wasn't sliding out of control on snow haha. Awesome! Thats a relief.

Some other questions,

My blower fan switch only works on the two highest settings, the lower two don't seem to do anything. Anyone else have this issue?

My truck is an '04 4.0L with 70k on it. Change the oil when I am supposed to, put plugs in it about every 10k. Do some Throttle body cleaner on it periodically. Anything I should do to keep it running tip top? Is there an EGR to clean out? Does the TJ have a PCV valve? I am mechanically inclined, just never learned much about my TJ.

Threads suck without pics, so here you go, all stock (had a cold air on it, but it just made the truck louder didn't really do anything for the performance and turned go-fast goals to my other cars) 2004 TJ 4.0L Auto, Sport, truck came out of Hawaii. Had it almost 3 years now, put 50k on it.



This is what I am talking about in terms of the HVAC

Had the same issue on my 06 TJ. Blower motor resistor. Under the passenger side dash. 2 10 mm bolts/screws hold in in place. About $15 at Autozone. Has about a 2" wide connector and the resistor itself is about the size of a credit card that slides into to plastic. Hope that helps. I'll look to see if I have my old one still and if need be, I'll send you a pic of it and the location.

Looks like a real nice Jeep (and I love the color too!). So you say it was hopping on a freshly paved surface? It appears you didn't give much info on what type of surface you tested it on, though logically it appears that you tested it on a high-traction surface.
