4WD shift to transfer case rod

Sorry if this is confusing and I don't have pics...
I went offroading one day to pull my buddy out and I switched into 4wd and I pulled it up to 4H, I then let off clutch, push gas, and *grrererewre* a grinding noise starts, so I put clutch in, nuetral, then I push down a little on the 4wd switch and it works fine...

When I got down pulling him out, I tried to pop her back into 2H by just pushing down, that would be a negative. It was still in 4wd and I practically punch the damn thing so many times I hurt. lol I then got under her, looked where the rod was to the 4wd switch, and the bolt connecting the rod to the switch, to pop it into 4wd, was lose. I remember doing this another time too. I was wondering why that bolt is always lose?? I did have a 3" BL lift on before, and I downgraded to a 1" BL and the switch was never fussed with, could this be a problem? Do I need a shorter rod??

I will try and take some pictures for you guys because I know the whole pics are bad and all that. but if you could help me out now it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

You definitely don't need a shorter rod, you simply need to adjust the shifter linkage control rod length back to where the factory set it. The rod can slip out of adjustment, there is but a single bolt that holds it in place. Get underneath and watch the linkage while a friend shifts it for you so you can figure out how it works. Then use a 1/2" wrench to loosen the bolt that secure's the rod's position you'll have discovered by this time and then slide the rod back in more where it used to be before it slipped out of adjustment.

I normally use a pair of pliers to move the short lever on the transfer case the rod connects to so the t-case is fully into 4Lo. Then I adjust the shift handle's rod length so it can consistently pull the little short lever all the way into 4Lo. Then tighten the crap out of that bolt so it the rod won't slip out again.
