check engine light on and then off again

Hi all. So my check engine light was on all weekend and I had planned to address the issue early this week. I climbed in and drove to work and, lo and behold, the check engine light was off.

Should I do anything?

J

I'd run the codes...just to see if it stored anything, so if you see it again its not a total surprise.

I'm not sure if the Jeeps store codes, but its worth checking (since its free @ AutoZone).

it should have left a code.but the computer will turn the light out if it passes self check usually after 2 drive cycles.

mine will do this if my gas cap isn't on right. if you have a locking gas cap it will do it too. just make sure you give it a few clicks when you close it. But without the codes its hard to say what it is

You can check for the code yourself,by switching the ignition on, off, on,off and then leave in on position. The code should appear in the odometer window or read "done" if there are no codes stored. This happens with my TJ in the winter months. The code is for slow response on one of the sensors. I have never done anything about it and it goes off after a few starts and does not store the code nor has it caused me to fail emissions test. Really worried me the first couple of times, now I think it's just my Jeeps way of making sure that I am paying attention.

Had that happen to me. Check Engine would be on for a few days then off a few. Checked the code and needed O2 sensor just before muffler. Just my story, but could be something else.
