Default Defrost

Ok, I'm driving down the road in my 97 Wrangler Sport and I hear this "POP" from my dash, and all of a sudden my defrost isn't coming from the center. It still comes from the side of dash on defrost, if you put it on floor/defrost, the floor works, but, it still won't come out of the center. Before I tear into it, I'd kind of like to know what I'm looking for. Any thoughts?

Everything else seems to work great. I can move the selector and everything seems to change, floor, vents, etc. I have read other posts and I can't find another one that talks about a "pop" sound and then center defrost only going out.

You may have just lost the ducting for the center vents. I should say that the ducts may have popped off. Look inside the vents.

Ok, I've looked underneath the dash, and moved the selector for the heat-defrost, and everything under the dash seems to be working. The diaphrams all move and close as they should. I have tried to look through the defroster vent and I can't seem to see anything. I am going to try and look through the center vents and see if maybe I can see anything there.. The ducting for the defrost is definately still hooked up to the main heater-blower box. Is there a flap that opens to release the warm air to the defrost? If so, will it make a "pop" noise if it springs shut. I've looked through the service manual and I really can't find a lot of diagrams on the defrost system.

Any more thoughts? I hate to pull the steering wheel and pull the dash if I don't have too. I'm willing to try anything to keep from pulling the dash out.
Thanks again for your help.

The defrost in my 1997 TJ quit working. Everything else worked fine. You may have the same problem that I had. No need to pull the steering wheel or the whole dash. Remove the plastic panel under the steering wheel (2 screws). Behind this panel is a steel panel with 4 screws, remove this panel. You should be able to see 3 vacuum actuators. With the engine running move the heater/defrost controls to see if all of the arms are moving.
The arms connect to plastic levers with a hook on the end. If one of these levers is broken, the door to the defrost won't open. Tellico 4X4 has replacement parts for about
$14.00 each. They are a PITA to replace, but much cheaper than going to a dealer.

Thank, I didn't notice any of them being broke when I was looking at the vacuum pumps, but, I will pull the panel and check it out right now..

Look on the Tellico 4X4 website and do a search for part numbers 17910.01 and 17910.02. these are the parts I'm talking about.
