Hard to change Gears

Hey everybody,
When i drive the jeep, it is sometimes hard to pass Gears, especially 1st and 2nd. It is not VERY HARD, but well it does require a more important effort than other gears.

I heard a big CLUNK one time, but i think it was my fault, releasing the clutch too soon in an uphill start.
Otherwise, i heard a grinding noise one time when downshiftting from 3rd to 2nd, but maybe i did it too fast and maybe the plates did not had the time to synchronise.

The previous manual cars i drove where a skoda fabia, a BMW 318 and a Renault Mégane, and it was more smooth.

So, is this normal for a jeep? When i had it checked before buying it at Jeep's service center, they told me the transmission was good and had no problem.

Thank you in advance for your answers

RE: Hard to change gears

I have the same problem with my '06 Wrangler. I asked a couple of my fellow owners, and they assured me it was a pretty standard thing across all Wranglers. I don't recall it being a problem with my '01 though. I'd be interested to see some other responses...

Its a truck transmission, they aren't known for being especially smooth, you can try some new fluid (syncromesh has a good reputation). But in reality, these are just clunky transmissions. I find myself shifting too fast for mine as well. Its terribly hard coming from the lightswitch like throw of my other car...but I'm getting better at remembering this is not a sportscar

on my 98 (2.4) i have no problems shifting gear smoothly (except reverse that sometimes take some work to engage).
i never look at it on the jeep but on motorcycles, just a change of fluid (master cylinder) and cleaning the slave cylinder and "piston" help a lot.

I have a 2000 wrangler and I have the same problem shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. All the articles I have read have basically told me that it is pretty normal to have difficulty with smooth shifting.

Reverse can be very challenging in my 98 TJ... How do you fix the Pilot bearing?
