My TJ with 50,000 miles just had the OPDA go bad. I talked to Chrysler, not too optimistic that they will do much, claim mine was not in the recall or VIN range to be fixed. I do not have the facilities or know how to fix myself. Options: dealer or private shop. At 50K should I go for the stroker motor? (Seattle area) thanks
I would talk to the dealer again as you should have a 7 year/70,000 mile warranty and they should replace the OPDA. I have heard that sometimes you have to call Chrysler to report the problem and they usually call you back and give you and the dealership the OK to fix. I heard the dealership will charge you a couple hundred dollars for the work.
I have around 100k on my 06 right now and don't think anything has been done about this. What symptoms comes with the problem? As of yesterday when I did a live data read on the Jeep with the scanner the only issue I see is that my o2 sensor is on its way out. If this is a common issue i would like to catch it right away.
so was this all 05 06 4.0Ls? was it something that was part of a recall? i have 77k miles and just want to know if its something thats on the horizon or was something that wasnt involving all the 06s
I have noticed a ticking from under the hood. I ruled out all traditional nocking issues, my oil presure has been a little higher then i like. Could this be a sign? About what is the repair cost doing it your self?
2 05's a TJ and a LJ, 76 and 106K respectively. No wear on either. 4.0 always seem to have high oil pressure from my experience. Did Chrysler ever fix this issue with a new OPDA?
My mechanic checked my 2005 Jeep TJ's OPDA at 58,000 km (Canada) & it had abnormal wear, so replaced it with new but customized OPDA.
The upper end/top bushing can't get any lube due to the oil seal being beneath the bushing. Just a matter of time & I wasn't going to take a chance, so called in my son-in-law & his father for the cure/fix. OPDA was taken to an elderly machinist who did an excellent job of the customizing!
- The custom upgrade included machining the casing to insert a larger brass bushing for the sealed bearing to fit into & then another small brass bushing to fit inside the sealed bearing to allow a proper fit for the shaft to slip through - working great so far & oil pressure is up.
Also added 10W40 Amsoil high zinc oil, which also helped the oil pressure & protection for the hot running 4lt / in line 6cyl motor.
Now much more relaxed when driving my Jeep!
Please email me for pictures & video explaining the procedure.
Best to pull it and check it out...odds are if it hasnt been replaced you will need a new unit that is modded. Wouldnt stop me from getting it by any means but just make sure you look at it.
Just re re-ask a question i saw posted, is this an 06 2.4L problem, if so id like to know as i have my transmission and transfer case out right now, and would like to do any engine work before i reinstall. Thank you in advance!
I'm going to pull mine and check/lube it today. Is there a certain lube I should use and which bearing/part of the shaft should I concentrate on? I have some marine grade grease that I used on my slip yoke...I also have a jar of knickel anti-seize floating around.
So yea I pulled mine a few minutes ago and at 57k there's a lot of wear...i'm going to replace it as soon as I can. I ended up putting a light coat of marine grease on the OPDA to cam gear. I don't think it'll help put you never know and it's a light enough coat that there shouldn't be any probs. A few pics..
Wear on OPDA gear
Wear on cam gear...could this cause my low and rough idle?
The seal under the target wheel seems to be getting lubed with oil but it's hard to tell in tyhe pic. The shaft spins easily but the wear worries me.
Punch the pin out & slide the gear off & the shaft comes right out. At least lube the shaft & top bushing with some oil if putting it back in for now. WHATEVER YOU DO, MARK THE GEAR POSITION. IT MAY LOOK LIKE IT GOES BACK ON EITHER WAY BUT THE HOLE IS SLIGHTLY OFF CENTER & IF YOU TAP THE PIN BACK IN IN THE WRONG POSITION IT WILL BREAK THE GEAR EASIER THAN YOU MIGHT THINK!!!!!!!!!! If you already have it off without marking just know it has to line up exactly & if you try it both ways it will be obvious which way it goes.
how do you check to see if it has premature wear? I have a 2006 Rubicon with 200000 miles on it.
