I'm having a problem with my heat, and I believe the cause of no heat is the switch. at least thats the conclusion I have come up with by reading a bunch of threads here all about others heater switch problems.

I just dont see anyway to get the heater switch/heater swith panel out of the dash without tradshing something. I have the ashtray out and see 3 phillips screws in there. I have the glove compartment off, and I can feel the switch by reaching thru the glove compartment but I cant figure out how to get this swiith out of the dashboard at all...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check ( replace ) the resister?

Speed 1-2-3 are through the resister 4 is direct to battery.


Remove the screws you see, it should come right out ??

pokey beat me to it.. Apologies, forgot about the dash and bezal up top.
Then it should come right out!

Pull the knobs straight off (fan speed and climate mode knob). Pry up the vent running along the inside of the windshield. Start at one end and tug, it will come off. It's held in by clips. You'll see 2 screws holding the center bezel on. Remove. And remove the screw behind the ashtray. now pull center bezel straight off.(center bezel is the big plastic piece surrounding radio, hvac knobs, etc.) Once bezel is off you'll be able to remove unit with fan/climate switches (2 screws) and check the connections behind for melting. If they look o.k. you probably need a new fan speed switch, about $25 at the dealer. let us know if you need more help.

The only screws I see are the 3 that are in the place of the removed ashtray.
Are there others, If so where?

You smelled something burning so, uummmm you try wiggling the switch while your heats on? It'll spark if you have a bad connection going on.

Ok,
I read the other thread and see that Pokey mentioned to me to check the speed control switch and the cimate switch. I only checked the speed control so I figured I would go back out to the jeep and check the climate switch also...That looked perfect also.

Well there is one more switch on that little switch panel.
its the switch that controls where you want the heat to come out from...defrost, feet, windows, etc. So before I came back in and jumped on my comp, I figured I would check that switch too. I took off the faceplate to all 3 switches and here is what I found...



Well, since that faceplate looked burnt at the 3rd swith, I had to take it out.

Ok, this looks like it could be the problem but my question to you experts here is this...

Any idea what could have caused this?
If so, I need to rectify that problem also.
By replacing this switch should everything work fine again?
Where is the cheapest place to get this part?

Im not really sure where the resistor is so No, I havent checked it yet.

Under you glove box 2 screws, you will see the wire. Go on eBay for the switch : )

Ok, that switch on the right is your climate control switch. The connector on back should have slots for 3 tabs on the back (2 if you don't have a/c). That was the connector that was fried on my jeep. 2 dealers told me that connector was discontinued, however member Hardermods recently said they are still available from detroit, dealers can order them. I didn't need the switch, just the connector. You may need both. The connector on that switch is the fan relay, so either one can become toast. I'll find my writeup on how I fixed mine and link it here.

Im sorry if I am sounding like a P.I.T.A. here I really dont mean it but I just want to make sure I do everything correctly and dont miss a very important step.

So under the glove box - 2 screws...you will see the wire?
What does this mean? This is where my resistor is?
and it is attached with 2 screws?

and the switch...cool I found one for $100 here...

Do some digging, I had to present the dealer with the part number. They were going to sell me the whole harness for like $350 bucks.... $50 just for the connector that plugs into the resister. As far as the control switches I just used regular old spade connects from radioshack..

The resister is in-between the passenger floor and the bottom of the dash, poke your head under there and follow any wires you see. Then you will see the hvac housing with the resister right there held in by two screws...
