Hi:

I am going to change the O2 sensors on my 1998 TJ Wrangler Sport (6 cylinder, 4.0L). According to the Haynes manual, I need to reset the emissions maintenance indicator light. Here is the paragraph from Haynes manual:

"On 1991 and later models, the emissions maintenance indicator light can only be reset with a special tool available at most auto parts stores. After replacing the oxygen sensor, take the vehicle to a dealer service department or other properly equipped repair facility and have the light reset."

I looked up the factory service manual, and it did not mention any such indicator light. I wonder if anyone has heard such a light?

If you end up with a "check engine" light or the like, you can go to autozone and they will reset as a rule...

you can also do this and it'll take care of the light.

ECU reset

To reset the ECU and any existing Check Engine light, all you have to do is disconnect the battery for 1-2 minutes. No need to go elsewhere and have someone use any special tool.

It turns out the Haynes manual is out-dated, even though it is supposed to cover models up to 2003. What it said only applies to OBD I. 1998 TJ uses OBD II, so no such indicator light. Which also explains why FSM did not mention it.

Like Jerry said just discconect the battery for a minute or two. This works on my sons 96 dodge ram.

Auto Zone will do it for you too but in NY (at least my location) were not "supposed" to do it I have no idea why but we gotta do it on the down low cause we get the 5th degree for clearin codes.

The "Maintenance Required" light just went on my '92 Wrangler at 82,500 miles and according to the maintenace schedule it's time to change my oxygen sensor. Well, the Jeep is running just fine so how do I turn the warning light off? I disconnected the negative cable on the battery for about 30 minutes and it still stays on. Any suggestions? Thanks!
