Shifting problems after lift
Hi all,
I have a 99 TJ that has a 2.5" Rough Country lift on it. Ever since the lift kit went on, 2nd & 4th gear pop out of gear unless I hold the shifter down. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks,
Steveo

The shifter boot will pull it out of gear if you dropped the t-case. Pull the boot off and see if it stays in gear. That's a good place to start.

See if you can lose the tcase drop. I didn't need mine with the RC 2.5" coil lift.

For mine, the problem was, there wasnt enough room for the stick to come back and the rubber boot would push it back into neutral, try taking off the rubber boot, it helps for a little bit but what i did was cut off 1/4 inch off the consol at first, then another 1/4 inch... i have a 4 inch with a 3 body, it wasnt lining up correctly. ill send you a pic of it if you like., jus pm me

I'm having the same problem. I got a 4in lift installed with tcase drop and now 2 is really hard to get it in, almost wants to pop out. I really want to find a way to fix this.

Mine did it with my 4" lift. After trying the shift boot route, the lower shift boot had to be removed and part of the metal cut away in there to make more room for the shifter. It was an angle thing. So much better after that was done.

Take your console out and try driving it. If it shifts good you just need to reposition the console a bit forward or backward to correct for the new position it needs to be in for smooth shifts. I had to reposition mine when I went to 4 inch lift. Just drill new mounting holes for it and go.

I highly recomend an after market shifter. I went with a B&M and didn't need to do any other mods in order to have a 6 inch lift.

I'll look into an aftermarket shifter. I really hope this works because this problem has taken the fun out of driving my jeep.

I also have a 2.1/2 inch Rough Country life . I use the TC drop with the kit and had the sa,me problem . I took out the RC tc drop amnd used washers in place .
I started out with 5 washers on the TC bolts . Drove it and it was good no vibs .
I put 6 washers on each bolt and it,s good no shifting problems and no vibs .
Something to think about if your jeep has alot of miles (60,000) or more go ahead and replace the U joints . After alot of miles your U joints may not like the new angle and ,may not last anyway .

Did a 2.5" lift on a 94 YJ that actually ended up about 4"-not enough weight to drop the springs. Shop delivered it, and couldn't get it into a couple gears to drive it up my driveway. OOPS! shame on them-they hadn't test driven it. Problem...the shift boot 'frame' now hit the shifter. They had to remove all the screws, hold the boot holddown bar and run the shifter through all the gears and let the frame 'slide' until everything worked. Then drilled and reinstalled the bolts/screws. Now the shifters don't hit anything and all is good. ON my Rubicon, 03-we put in RC 4" lift, everything...and the shifting levers 'dropped' down a bit-don't stick up as much now but everything works fine...also, it's an automatic so I think that makes a difference. Did NOT use the drop pitman arm from the RC. Tried it-and tierod assembly was clanging and banging on the differential skid plate badly. Other jeepers with same RC lift said to go back to stock pitman arm and it worked. Lineup is back, no clanging...just FYI...
