My multifunction light switch will not operate the fog lights correctly. I am curious about how many of you have had the same or similar problems with your combination light/bright/fog/turn signal switch? I have a 2001 TJ Sport w/ a 4.0L engine and automatic transmission.

I replaced mine a few months ago, on a 98.









These are pages out of a shop manual I downloaded for about $10.00. PM me if they are unreadable and I will email them to you. I think the switch costs around $60 but all the parts houses can get it.

I have needed to replace mine for the past three years. I am just to lazy to do it. Its kinda funny cause my left turn signal comes on when I step on the brake.

If you do a search the topic has come up quite a few times the past few months. Seems to be a very common issue. I said screw it and just hardwired the fogs with my own switch.

No, but I don't have fogs.

However, on a previous Jeep after a rainstorm, I did take it apart and clean all the contacts and add dielectric grease after everything went haywire.

Seems like that makes sense. After you find the wires it is probably just a matter of buying a switch and re-wiring. What switch did you use?

All I did was go to any auto store like autozone, bought a spool of some heavy gauge wire as well as a set of generic $5 blue led toggles switches. Ran the wires, installed the toggles on each side of my cig lighter and called it a day. I installed one for the fogs and one for my rear reverse/tailgater light. I can take pics if you are interested....just pm me. Also I did not install a seperate relay since they aren't really powerful light but most people would reccomend it.

I had the same problem on my 02 Sport 4.0L, I fixed the problem by getting a can of spray Elec. Contact cleaner from Radio Shack and pulling on the end of the handle hard enough to give me a small opening where I could insert the end of the spray tube and then I just sprayed the heck out of it. Then I worked the switch back and forth for several minutes and sprayed some more. It has been working fine ever since. Be sure to use a rag to cover up for any over spray.

make sure you top off your blinker fluid after you replace that switch, if not you could burn the switch up.

I replaced mine on my 98 about 2 months ago. I got the switch from autozone for less than $40.

Only because your turn signal lever has gotten a bit lazy and isn't quite returning all the way to center after completing a left turn. Knudging the lever the rest of the way into the center position will stop the left turn signal light from coming on when you step on the brake. Of course replacing the entire turn signal switch with a new non-lazy switch will fix it too.

This sounds like my first option. I'll take the switch out and see if I can't get the cover off to expose the contact points. Great job for Saturday. I've contacted parts houses, but I can't imagine why the problem can't be fixed with a little know-how versus replacing the whole thing in aggregate. Thanks!

Thanks! I found one but I'm going to try to fix the problem before I put down on a replacement switch.

Good luck, I have taken my fair share of switches and other electronic/electrical gizmos apart and fixed them over the past 45 years... but when I pulled my turn signal switch out to replace it, it looked like the kind of switch I didn't want to bother trying to get inside of. It looked pretty well sealed/riveted against tinkering, especially since it's likely a cheap aluminum contact that has worn out that isn't likely to be easily replaced or fixed.

My left turn signal indicator on the dash stays on after I use it. Is that caused by a bad switch, or a bad connection behind the dash?

It gets annoying because after a minute the dinger goes off to let me know the turn signal is still activated, but I can't shut it off,

No that doesn't seem to be my problem, even after I flick the switch to the right turn indicator, the left turn signal indicator on the dash is still lit. I assume it's a bad connection behind the dash?
