Just picked up an 01 Wrangler today. It's the 4 cyl and it's a 5 speed. I noticed on the drive home that when driving in fourth and fifth gear, it had trouble acceleration much, especially when going up hills. I'll put the pedal to the floor and it just seems to barely do much. It's lifted and has 33" tires. Don't know if this matters much. Is this how most of them are or is there something wrong.

Yes,,,and 33's on a 4 banger is even worse if the PO hasn't installed lower gears.
Stock gears for your 5 speed should be 4.10.
With 33's you need 4.88's.

Ah, thanks for the prompt response. Guess I'll have to look into what goes into putting in lower gears. I'm a Jeep Nooob.

If you've never done gears...have a pro do it. Not a job for the do it yourselfer...average cost. $1200 -$1400 for gears , master kits, and install.

Is that price for each axle or both combined?

The type of tire tread you have, and how much tread you have left, makes a huge difference also.

example: I ran superswampers 33s on my 01 4.0 for years. going down the interstate was impossible. I could not maintain 70 going up a hill. I would push it all the way to the floor and it would still loose speed. also at that speed it would start oscillating.

I changed to an all Terrain tire and now it has little problem keeping those speeds and getting up the hills. It would help if I changed the gear ratio but I rarely need to go that fast now.
