Default Transmission noise is back

I have a 42RLE, 4spd auto 2003 Wrangler transmission. It is making a whining sound. It went away for a while, but it's back again. The sound seems to be some type of cavitation in the transmission lines. If I grab the line with pliars, the sound stops. I've heard it might come from not running Mopar ATF in it. However, it seems hard to believe a different brand of the same type of ATF could make that much noise. Are there any mechanics out there that can help with some advice?

I'm not running synthetic. The fluid level is dead on. The filter was changed about 5000 miles ago. I checked it and it looks fine.

are you running an ATF +4??? AN ATF +4 or Synthetic is basically the same thing. if your not you need to swap it in. The Jeep auto tranmissions are very picky.

The dealer accidently put in atf 3 in my 3 speed auto and within a few weeks I had wierd noises on cold start ups only in park, a over heating trans, bucking on a hard shift, and my front pump seal went boom. I made them pay for everything and they put in atf 4 and I havnt had an issue since.

make sure your filter is changed again. basically on a auto trans theres not much to maintain or adjust anymore. good fluid and a fresh filter cures most issues. If the dealer or shop put in the wrong fluid it should state what was used on the receipt. show the reciept tell them its the wrong stuff and make them do a full drain. torque converter and all with a new filter. varnish and gunk can build up very quickly with the wrong oil inside.

I'm running ATF4+, but it's not MOPAR stuff. Does it matter? Does the trans just have a screen or is it a filter? It runs fine, but the noise is annoying. It is mainly while it is in park and seems to go away while driving, but that may just be an inability to hear it through the engine noise.

any atf+4 will do. theres an actual filter inside the pan. Next time your turn the jeep on and its making noise try shifting into neutral and see if the noise goes away. whats wierd is sitting in park theres not much going on inside the tranny

It's still there in Neutral, but not in drive. While crawling around I also saw a bolt connecting the engine and transmission is missing. Can't imagine that would make any differance. Anyone know what size one of those bolts is? Stealership bolts hurt $$$$. LOL
