Hello!
I found a thread under my rear bumper where the stock tow hook was mounted. Do you know which Thread this is? 1/2" like the tow hooks at the front? I mean the thread at the right on the pic: ![]() I think about installing a tow hook like this one on this thread: ![]() Thanks in advance. nicolas-eric

I am just guessing but I would say it's probably 14 - 16 MM. I think everything after 03 is metric.
P.S. I think black would look better than bright pink!!

Yeah, I think that pink would look pretty silly on your Manly rig!

The stock rear tow hook not only attaches to that threaded spot but to another bolt though the hole behind where that one is. I'm not sure one bolt will do the trick.

are you shure? i had a 1/2" thread at the front bumper where my winch plate is mounted. but i drilled it out to a M12 thread.
M16 would be great. then the hook that i want is strong enough with 15.000 lbs maximum load. it´s a bad pic. it´s not pink but red. but i´ll buy another one. it has more maximum load:

Um.... no, I don't but see the two holes behind the point you're looking at? The bolt goes through the smaller one and you have access to the nut through the larger hole. The hook is bent to lay flat against the frame..... and mine already had a bolt on the threaded hole... so I couldn't tell you anything about the threads. I could probably take a pic in the morning, no light in the garage right now.... and I'm not exactly sure where my camera is

is the stock tow hook strong enough? is it available as a spare part? what does it cost?
i have to measure the 2nd hole. perhaps something like this will fit: ![]() i want a rear tow hook the next time when i go wheeling. the last times i used a recovery belt around the frame, but thats not a perfect solution.

is the stock tow hook strong enough? it looks very small. and it´s a hook that shows to the side. i think the revovery strap can fall off. that doesn´t look very strong to me.

I couldn't tell you how strong the factory tow hook is. Mine didn't come with one.
I did what Stu did for a rear tow hook: LINK ---> http://www.stu-offroad.com/guards/gas/tj_hooks.htm If you were to go this route, be sure to bolt through only ONE wall of the tube frame. Otherwise you'll pinch the tube and work the tow hook loose over time. Also, the two hook that I used is identical to the one pictured in the link, but it also has a little retainer clip that holds the recovery strap onto the hook. EDIT: Here's a tow hok that has the retainer clip I mentioned: http://www.4wheelparts.com/PDT1243.aspx

I need to put some tow hooks on, too. I plan on buying some very soon, and mounting 1 on each frame rail in the front. I got a rear bumper with a reciever that should be delievered this week and I am thinking of getting a hitch with a D-ring, would that be alright for the rear? About mounting the hooks though, I know I shouldn't run them all the way through the frame rails without sleeve to prevent it from crushing inwards, so I could drill holes for the bolts, and maybe drill out the hole on the other side so I can get a socket in there to tighten it? I was thinking the sleeve idea would be good but if I can do it without a sleeve without sacrificing any strength, I want to.

Here they are on my Jeep: ![]() EDIT: I left the rubber bumper pads on there so that the tow hooks wouldn't smack me on the legs every time I walk around the front of my rig.

I can't seeing some hole hurting the integrity of the frame. Make sure you hit it with at least some primer to avoid rusting though, cause rust will mess us your frame no questions asked.

You could use the D-Ring at the hitch, or the something like the following (either should be OK): LINK ---> http://www.4wheelparts.com/PPT5830.aspx

Yeah, either kinda thing would work fine for me, I'm just making sure everything will be ok if I do that. Thanks for the help! Finally I will have some recovery points, because now I have 0. But my Jeep will get more places than the people I usually go wheelin with, so I duno, if I'm stuck, they probably would be too. Maybe I need some friends with Jeeps.

![]() Actually, they are quite strong. I used it to pull a f-150 out of a hole. The guy had burried the back end of the truck to the frame rails. No problems with the strap falling off either. The stuck truck: Last edited by Unlimited; 11-27-2007 at 06:47 PM. |
