Really quick regarding the pass. The park office is located at the end of Robert Moses when you cross the second bridge, it will be on the right of the traffic circle. The office is open 7 days a week until 5 p.m. The permit costs $65. This is technically a "Fishing" permit so you will be required to have fishing gear for every adult in the vehicle. Also, you will need a recovery strap, portable toilet, shovel and air gauge. Your tires can't be larger than 33". Those are the requirements and from my understanding they are checked regularly and if your missing anything you may be ticketed. I'm sure they will be checking everyone on opening day so just a heads up. I also recommend a portable air compressor, its not a requirement and I think there may be an air station, but the lines might get long.
What beach do you guys normally go to? I plan on going to Sore Thumb. It seems like everyone typically goes to Democratic Point so that might be crowded. Another thing that I have been told is that some beaches have restrictions in terms of when your allowed in. Some require that you enter the beach before 7 a.m. or after 5 p.m. You can leave whenever you like but you just can't re-enter if its between those times.
I have been fishing those beaches for a very long time a have been checked once in the last five years. They check more often on the weekends and hoildays. But once your on the beach you probally wont be bothered as long as a fishing pole is visable.Regarding demo vs. sore thumb, ST might not be open,Youcan call to find out what beaches are open ahead of time.ST was closed a long time last year because of the big storm we had . So call ahead or just go to demo,it so much bigger any way.And during the Striped Bass run all bets are off,you can come and go as you please. The tides are what you are going to pay attention
YOU DONT REALLY NEED A PORTABLE TOILET,A BUCKET WILL DO. THEY ARE NOT THAT STRICT.
