Anyone know how salvage titles work in New Mexico? The MVD website does not read very clear.

What kind of details are you looking for? There's really not much to them.

I believe that certain auto insurance co. are reluctant to give coverage.

It almost seems like you are not allowed to resale a salvage title but if you do certain inspections must be met first. Basically how do I know the title is transferable and the jeep is actually allowed on the road.

My mother purchased a salvaged vehicle about two years ago and all they asked for, was to pass emissions if your in an area that needs emissions. We sold that car about three months ago and we didn't go through anything specific. I guess it all depends on why it was "salvaged". And yes you can't get any other type of insurance other than liability.

What exactly are you trying to do? Buy a vehicle with a salvage title? Sell a vehicle with a salvage title? Buy back one you wrecked?

Technically, in NM it "can't" be done.

New Mexico One Source of Law®

Quote:
Salvage title
66-3-10.1. Salvage vehicles; nonrepairable vehicles; certificate of title ; transfer of ownership.
A. It is unlawful for a person to sell or otherwise convey ownership of a salvage or nonrepairable vehicle unless the certificate of title or ownership is branded or a comparable title , certificate or ownership document has been issued by another state or jurisdiction.
B. An owner of a nonrepairable vehicle shall sell or otherwise convey that vehicle only to a licensed wrecker of vehicles or a person licensed by a jurisdiction outside of this state to process vehicles by dismantling, wrecking, shredding, crushing or selling motor vehicle parts or scrap material or otherwise disposing of motor vehicles.
C. A nonrepairable vehicle shall not be repaired, reconstructed or restored for operation on the roads or highways of this state.
D. This section does not apply to:
(1) a person whose motor vehicle has been stolen or taken without that person's consent unless, if the motor vehicle is recovered, it is a salvage or nonrepairable vehicle; or
(2) a person conveying ownership of a motor vehicle to an insurance company as a result of a total loss insurance settlement. For the purpose of this paragraph, "total loss insurance settlement" means the transfer of ownership of a motor vehicle by a person to an insurance company as a result of a settlement in which the motor vehicle is determined to be salvage or nonrepairable.
History: 1978 Comp., § 66-3-10.1, enacted by Laws 1990, ch. 120, § 24; 2005, ch. 324, § 8.
There's really no way to re-register a salvage titled vehicle in NM to a regular title. At least not legally.

a salvage title is basically a way that insurance companies can "TAG" a vehicle as no longer worth full value for insurance coverage purposes. a vehicle gets a "SALVAGE TITLE" when the insurance company values the vehicle repairs at more then the vehicle is worth. ALOT of factors go into it. the best example is on motorcycles. you lay down a bike and the plastic fairings can easily cost more to replace the the value of the bike so the insurance company totals it. you, a salvage yard or someone else can buy the bike back but it comes with a salvage title. you can the repair the plastic, put race skins on it etc, register it and drive it all you want. but the Ins Co will only cover it for liability ins.

now in some states, NM is not one, texas is, if you repair the vehicle, have it inspected, yo can CLEAR the salvage title. but a car fax report will still show it was salvaged at one time.

a salvage vehicle vehicle is great to buy if you want to super mod it, Off road it, Race it or you spend almost nothing for it and it is a "Disposable investment" for you.

selling it can be easy if you find another person that is interested in buying it for the same reasons you did. I have bought 2 salvage bikes, fixed them both, turned them into race bikes, raced them, crashed them, fixed them and then resold them for what i had into them.

the MVD only cares if it has liability ins on it when you register it. they do not care what you do with it after that.

and you can transfer it any time, just make sure the buyer knows its a salvage, you do a bill of sale saying it is a salvage and you report the transfer to the MVD afterwords.

I was debating look at this Jeep Wrangler but did not want to waste time driving to Los Lunas if I can't actually purchase it.

I agree but this state is totally weird with Wranglers. I constantly see people who I would not consider Jeep people driving them, and ever wrangler I see for sale is usually listed over KBB and they sell. I have been looking for about 6 months. I actually bought a 2012 Oscar Mike Edition from Casa but they gave me 0% financing and than 4 days later they called me and tried to change it to 1.99%. Not a huge deal but it left a bad taste in my mouth and I gave it back to them plus 400 miles and a half tank of fuel.

Since then I just decided to look for something cheaper not a daily driver that I would not be scared to mess up on the weekend.

I see random charred cars in the mesa and the puerco. If the money was enough I would. I'm sure its not or the remains wouldn't last long. Would need enough to make a few hundred after paying for help and a tow rig with 4wd.

Sounds like a lot of work for not much pay out I think it would be easier and much more worth while to crack open some ice cold ones in the middle of no where and pretend we would attempt to take all these junkers some where. Haha
